Teaming up to achieve 35 bcm of sustainable biomethane by 2030 and beyond.
About us
The BIP is an industrial partnership, initiated by the European Commission in the REPowerEU plan, in which policy makers, industry and other stakeholders team up with the goal to support the achievement of the target of 35 billion cubic metres annual production and use of sustainable biomethane by 2030, and to create the preconditions for a further ramp-up of its potential towards 2050. The need to scale up biomethane in Europe is more urgent than ever, following the need to reduce dependency on natural gas imports from Russia and address high energy prices while simultaneously addressing the climate crisis. The work of the Biomethane Industrial Partnership is structured in five Task Forces in which members collaborate at expert level on specific topics on the basis of the partnership’s Work Programme. Task Forces work on specific pre-defined actions and create deliverables that help to achieve the goal of the partnership. All EU policy makers, Member State representatives, companies active in biomethane and other stakeholders that wish to actively contribute and be involved to achieving the goal of the Partnership can sign up for Task Force membership.

🌿 On the second day of the #EBAConference, our BIP members highlighted several crucial topics. Tom Howes (DG ENER and member of BIP Governing Board) shared his positive perspective on the recent updates to NECPs. He expressed optimism about the sector’s technological advancements, which are enabling increased biomethane production from limited biomass resources. Michał Łęski, PhD (Ministry of Climate and Environment of Poland, Member State of Task Force 1) gave an overview of Poland’s initiatives. He highlighted measures like the feed-in tariff introduced last year and the ongoing development of legislation to support investments in the agricultural-biogas sector. Giovanni Perrella (Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, Italy, and member of Task Force 1) shared Italy's perspective on primarily using biomethane in the transport sector and for industrial decarbonisation. He emphasised the strong, positive sentiment toward biomethane in Italy, noting the high demand from industry, which sees it as the only viable solution for achieving decarbonisation targets by 2030, given the lack of alternative options. Aymeric de Loubens (Ministry in Charge of Energy, France, Member State part of Task Force 1) highlighted the significant growth of biomethane production in France over the past decade. In 2023 alone, production increased by 31% compared to 2022, with nearly 700 biomethane plants now operating across the country. Charles-Henri des Villettes (Air Liquide, part of Task Force 2 & 3) presented their sustainability assessment methodology with four key criteria for project selection. During the breakout session ‘Beyond AD: the future is now,’ focused on methanation and gasification, Leonardo Senatori (Pietro Fiorentini, part of Task Force 2, 3 & 6) mentioned key factors for their implementation, sharing insights from their ongoing projects in this field, while Maria Georgiadou (DG RTD and co-chair of Task Force 5) provided an overview of the EU programmes, funding schemes and initiatives in this area and highlighted the BIP Task Force 5 report on the current state of biomethane technologies. During the last session, Filippo Munna (Hexagon Agility and member of Task Force 4) emphasised biomethane's ability to significantly reduce emissions, highlighting that it is the only carbon-negative fuel with great potential for use in the maritime sector. Andrea Qualiano (Edison and member of Task Force 2 & 4) shared his insights on bioLNG, calling it a fuel with tremendous potential for reducing GHG emissions and decarbonising the maritime industry.
