The EU could gain another Luxembourg in terms of GDP! All thanks to… the EV charging industry 💡 📈 ➡️ The EV charging sector is a net positive on the European economy, set to generate €94 billion by 2035 - the equivalent of the GDP of Luxembourg! In total, this represents a 514% growth since 2024. ➡️ Between 2019 and 2024 alone, the value pool of the industry has increased significantly, with an annual average growth rate of 47%, from nearly €2.4 billion to over €15.3 billion in 2024. BEVs are less expensive to buy and drive than PHEVs. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, the average selling price of BEVs is €15,200 lower than PHEVs in Germany, France and the UK in 2025. Even in the case of larger vehicles, a study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) found that D-segment BEVs are €9,300 to €10,100 cheaper to own and operate over five years than their PHEV counterparts. 🔴🔵 Last week, ChargeUp Europe participated in the Kongres Nowej Mobilności | New Mobility Congress in Katowice, Poland. ChargeUp Europe’s Secretary General Lucie Mattera spoke on a topic critical to the future of transport and energy in Europe: the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation #AFIR. ⚡AFIR is the EU’s flagship regulation designed to sync EV uptake and the deployment of EV charging infrastructure across the continent. It sets binding targets to ensure a seamless, interoperable and accessible network, helping to decarbonise road transport and boost cross-border travel. Today at #FLEXCON2025, a coalition of 13 European business associations and NGOs launched the Flexible Demand Accelerator Pledge 💪 Europe’s electricity system will need double the flexibility by 2030. The EU has already introduced more than 70 legal provisions to unlock #DemandSideFlexibility. The rules exist, but without proper implementation, we risk higher bills, wasted renewable power, and renewed fossil-fuel dependence. The pledge calls on the European Commission to: 🔹 Embed National Tripartite Dialogues on Flexible Demand in every Member State 🔹 Ensure all demand-side resources, from homes to factories to #EVs, can access energy markets on equal terms 🔹 Align tariffs and incentives with real-time price signals 🔹 Monitor Member State progress through annual reporting to the Energy Council Flexible demand is key to cutting costs, integrating renewables, and making Europe’s energy system more resilient, affordable, and competitive. 📢 Watt’s the Hold-Up? ⚡ In support of the European Commission’s upcoming Grid Package, ChargeUp Europe has collected a series of actionable policy and regulatory recommendations to prepare European energy networks for the #emobility transition. Watt’s the Hold-Up? Fixing Grids for E-Mobility suggests: 🔹 Amending the Electricity Directive so grid connections are prioritized where they deliver the greatest system benefits, with clearer and more differentiated timelines. 🔹 Introducing EU-wide minimum requirement for how Distribution System Operators (DSOs) prepare their distribution network development plans (DNDP). 🔹 Expanding EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER)'s mandate to cover market governance and help align national regulatory approaches. 🔹 Promoting “grid-aware” charging based on flexible tariffs, flexible connection. agreements, and on extending the TEN-E scope to include grid digitalization. 🔹 Allowing the EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Fund to be used both for grid upgrades and charging deployment. The message is clear: the current EU #grids framework is ready to guide Member States, public authorities, National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) and DSOs to implement impactful measures to unblock grid access and to support the transition to emobility on an EU-level.
