Grace is a key pillar of Crisis Group’s HR team, providing expert guidance and hands-on support across the full spectrum of human resources, from recruitment and retention to training, development, and staff well-being. She ensures that HR systems run smoothly, best practices are upheld, and managers across the organisation are equipped to lead effectively and keeps critical operations running seamlessly. She also plays an active role in advancing Crisis Group’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, contributes to internal communications, and helps keep the HR unit firing on all cylinders. Grace's journey at Crisis Group began in 2005 as an Administrative Assistant in the Nairobi office. Since then, she has steadily risen through the ranks, Office Manager, HR Officer, and now HR Generalist, demonstrating commitment, adaptability, and deep institutional knowledge every step of the way. Eighty years after the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, we are entering a far more volatile era of nuclear risk. Crises involving nuclear-armed states - from Europe to the Himalayas - are intensifying. Today, the risk is not only intentional use, but accidental escalation driven by mistrust, miscalculation, or lack of communication. With arms control frameworks weakening and geopolitical frictions rising, world leaders must take urgent steps to restore guardrails - starting with reliable channels for communication, restraint in conventional arms buildups, and collective reinforcement of the nonproliferation norm. The city’s fall would have major downstream effects, disrupting Kyiv’s supply lines along the entire eastern frontline. 🇨🇩 🇷🇼 Elswehere, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels pledged to sign a comprehensive peace agreement by mid-August. Both sides also reinforced their positions in South Kivu province, which could signal an imminent battle for Uvira city. Tensions are rising in Côte d’Ivoire as the presidential election looms. To ease electoral frictions, the Ivorian government should organise a formal dialogue with the opposition as soon as possible. Côte d’Ivoire will hold a presidential election in October. Races for the top office in this country, which boasts the largest economy in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa, have been fraught for the past three decades. No election since 1995 has resulted in a peaceful transfer of power and many are concerned that the 2025 vote will not go smoothly, either. President Alassane Ouattara’s decision to run a fourth time, the exclusion of the main opposition figures and an electoral system accused of bias have raised fears of violence. To ease electoral frictions, the Ivorian government should organise a formal dialogue with the opposition as soon as possible, and the parties whose candidate has been excluded should resist the temptation to boycott.
