This week, over 1,000 participants gathered in Brussels for the third edition of European Biomethane Week, under the theme “Biogases: Leading globally, acting locally.” The event touched on a “very important subject at a very important time”, as underlined by the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen in his opening statement Across all discussions, from policymakers to industry leaders, one message resonated loud and clear: 👉 Biogases are not just about energy; they are about resilience, innovation, and Europe’s ability to shape its own sustainable future. At this morning’s #EBAConference, we heard from 5 national and regional representatives from across Europe and beyond, each sharing innovative approaches to biomethane development and the power of local action to drive global sustainability goals.   📍 Catalonia – Spain: Rosa Altisent Rosell, Agricultura i Ramaderia de la Generalitat de Catalunya, presented the Catalan Biogas Strategy 2024–2030 and Digestate Strategy 2024–2030, built around knowledge transfer, collaboration with business and farmers, and streamlined administrative processes. There are currently 74 biogas plants in operation, paving the way toward regional and national decarbonisation.   📍 Brazil: Sávia Gavazza shared Brazil’s Ecological Transformation Plan, which connects employment, social justice, and environmental sustainability. Key tools include the Brazilian Sustainable Taxonomy, guiding green investments, and the forthcoming Brazilian Carbon Market, set to launch by 2027. In addition, Alberto Amorim highlighted that in 2024, São Paulo was included on UNESCO’s list in recognition of its sustainable development initiatives. 📍 The Netherlands: Lotte Visser Ph.D. (Ministry of Climate and Green Growth) discussed how biomethane imports can support a functioning internal market, enhance cost efficiency, and reduce GHG emissions while contributing to broader European energy goals.   📍 Denmark: Kristian Havskov Sørensen (Danish Energy Agency) highlighted Denmark’s success in scaling biomethane production. He noted that Denmark is proposing a blending obligation in the EU, which would create significant demand for biomethane and help achieve the 35 bcm biomethane production target.   📍 Germany: Stefan Dr. Rauh (Fachverband Biogas e.V.) outlined the policy shifts needed to overcome Germany’s biogas deadlock. This morning at the #EBAConference, Milenko Matosic from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) presented the newly released report: 📘 “Delivering the UAE Consensus: Tracking Progress Toward Energy Capacity and Doubling Energy Efficiency by 2030.”   This publication, the second in a series, tracks progress toward two central goals from the Outcome of the First Global Stocktake at COP28: ⚡ Tripling renewable power capacity and 💡 doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030   Milenko Matosic emphasised that the energy transition requires: · Greater investment in emerging markets and developing economies, where financing remains costly and access to capital constrained. · Building resilient, sustainable, and diversified supply chains, powered by innovation and local value creation. · Reducing material demand through smarter production and substitution.   The renewable energy workforce continues to grow, 16.2 million in 2023, with potential to reach 40 million by 2050 under a Paris-aligned pathway.   Together, these efforts will determine how effectively we deliver on the UAE Consensus and secure a sustainable energy future for all.   #biogas #biomethane #EUBW2025 #UAEConsensus #3xRenewables

🍃 From waste to energy, biomethane is leading the way in sustainability.   As sustainability reporting grows more stringent and transparent, today’s session “Sustainability first! A checklist for sustainable production” explored the tools and policies ensuring biomethane production lives up to its climate credentials.   The discussion highlighted the importance of Annex VI and voluntary schemes in advancing sustainability, as well as cutting-edge methane detection technologies that reinforce environmental accountability. Valorising bio-CO2 from the biogas sector offers the EU a scalable and competitive pathway to reduce emissions and support a sustainable, low-carbon economy.   The circular economy perspective took center stage this afternoon at #EBAConference, where we explored the growing market for bio-CO2.   In the biogas sector, bio-CO2 captured during upgrading can either be stored underground (BioCCS) or used as a raw material for e-fuels, chemicals, building materials, greenhouses, and food and beverage production. ✅ Unlike fossil CO2, which releases long-stored carbon into the atmosphere, bio-CO2 is part of the natural carbon cycle and does not increase the overall concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. This makes it a sustainable solution capable of achieving net or even negative emissions.   📈 By 2040, EU biomethane plants could capture up to 89 Mt of bio-CO2 annually, more than 25% of the carbon capture required to meet the EU Climate Law targets.   📌 With the right standardisation and policy framework, this sector can fully contribute to the EU’s carbon strategy. 👏 Thanks to our speakers for a constructive discussion. Europe can unlock sustainable growth by turning biogases and other local resources into opportunity.   As the EU is set to launch its Bioeconomy Strategy in November 2025, speakers at this afternoon’s #EBAConference explored how circular solutions can maximise the use of Europe’s homegrown resources.   All speakers agreed on one point: Europe cannot rely on external resources for what it can produce sustainably.
