Live from #Interact2025 Our panel “Regulatory Framework on Digital Advertising: Balancing Privacy and Innovation” has just wrapped. Timed with the Commission’s announcement today to simplify GDPR compliance for small and medium-sized businesses by easing record-keeping obligations, the discussion explored what meaningful simplification could and should look like. Key takeaways: The GDPR has been widely replicated beyond Europe; it remains to be seen whether the AI Act and DSA will have a similar global impact. A lack of national harmonisation continues to pose a risk to innovation across Europe. There is ongoing uncertainty around how the GDPR will interact with the AI Act. Member States are working toward a harmonised approach, and the EDPB is preparing its own guidance on the interplay. Simplification efforts must strike the right balance: reducing administrative burdens on SMEs while upholding the GDPR’s core principles and fundamental rights.
