🚌 Digital Omnibus: are EU rules becoming more complicated than the problems they're meant to solve? The intent of EU digital regulation is often to be risk-based, but the reality for European publishers is a rising tide of complex, one-size-fits-all horizontal obligations. 😩 This gap is creating real problems: ❌ Some rules are becoming more complicated than the problems they're meant to solve. ❌Compliance is anchored in burdensome procedures over practical outcomes. ❌Measures to ease the burden on SMEs are entirely insufficient. 📉 We're calling for an urgent, comprehensive simplification that goes well beyond the current digital omnibus scope. To ensure rules remain business-friendly and proportionate, we need action on core areas like: The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) The ePrivacy Directive The Political Advertising Regulation The upcoming Digital Fairness Act (commitment to simple and targeted rules 🎯) The AI Act (simplification must NOT dilute copyright protections! ⚖️) Simplification isn't about weakening necessary protections, it's about making rules work better so the news business can focus on delivering quality journalism! It was a pleasure to introduce the team and board from News Media Europe to the Irish media landscape, hospitality and culture in Dublin last week. The tour of The Irish Times Citywest print production plant was, as ever, a high point, thanks to Morgan Webster and the team. Seeing and hearing the presses roll is a pulsating, noisy reminder to all of the nightly thrill of producing a compendium of the pick of news, business, features and sports stories from the preceding 24 hours. At The Irish Times HQ in Tara Street, we had ample opportunity to debate and discuss issues of importance to the industry we all care about. Whether we are talking about AI and sustainability, or copyright and press freedom, we understand that change is the common theme. Our role is to grapple with these questions and input into policy in the right areas, so that journalism and media will be able to serve the needs of citizens in the years ahead. Irish Times Operations Director Eimear Moran gave a masterclass in digital marketing, the rollout of a new brand identity for The Irish Times and the success of the Group’s digital subscriptions. Big thanks to Head of Marketing Tania Meighan for ensuring everything ran on wheels and to NewsBrands’ CEO Ann-Marie Lenihan and Executive Director at News Media Europe Wout van Wijk for the organisation that went into the visit. Many thanks to the News Media Europe Board and team for their enthusiastic engagement with all activities, including those of a more convivial nature, over a very productive and fun couple of days.

Besøget hos The Irish Times’ trykkeri var fascinerende. Mediebygningen i midtbyen gjorde indtrykket stærkere. 🚨 Press Freedom at Risk: Misuse of EMFA to Justify Registries 🚨 Several European governments are attempting to introduce mandatory press registries, claiming these are required by the new European #MediaFreedomAct #EMFA. This is a dangerous misinterpretation of EU law. 👉 Under Article 6, Member States must ensure that ownership and funding information of media outlets is publicly available in national databases. These databases are meant to be a one-stop shop for transparency – not a mechanism to register, license, or approve the press. 📌 Turning databases into registries: -> Shifts the compliance burden from public authorities onto publishers -> Opens the door to state control, political capture, or even censorship -> Undermines Europe’s constitutional traditions of a free, independent press If such proposals advance, we will raise the matter with the European Commission, the European Court of Human Rights, and the European Board for Media Services. #PressFreedom #MediaFreedom #EMFA #EUlaw #Democracy

Choose truth. Choose facts. Choose journalism. Today more than ever. Support editorial press. Independent journalism is fundamental to Europe’s democracy and security and must be at the heart of EU policy. Journalism acts as a crucial barrier to disinformation, fosters community engagement, and serves as a watchdog for democracy. A significant challenge we highlight is the financial sustainability of the press sector, largely driven by social networks and platforms controlling digital value chains and advertising revenues. This economic vulnerability directly impacts democratic health, as economic viability is essential for freedom. #journalism #press #democracy Michael McGrath Teresa Ribera Henna Virkkunen Roberto Viola Renate Nikolay Giuseppe Abbamonte Anna Herold Emmanuelle Du Chalard Lucía Recalde Krisztina Stump Vincent Peyrègne Stig Kirk Ørskov Elena Perotti Cherilyn Ireton
