🌍 How Belgium’s Multilingual Market Shapes Engineering Recruitment One of the most unique (and challenging) aspects of recruiting electronics engineers in Belgium has to be the the language factor. Unlike many countries where English dominates technical hiring, in Belgium the reality looks different. Naturally, given the local languages spoken, Flemish companies often expect Dutch + English, with Walloon companies seeking French + English speakers. We are starting to see that multinationals & R&D hubs (Leuven, Ghent, Brussels) are increasingly moving toward English-first, but local language skills still help integration and collaboration and often dominate job specification calls with our customers. 🎯 What this means for recruitment? ⚡ For engineers: Languages can open or close doors. A strong technical profile plus Dutch or French often gives you an edge. 🏚️ For employers: Setting “native-level” language as a hard filter can cut out great talent, especially if the real must-have is technical expertise. 🗣️ For the market overall: Belgium’s multilingual reality makes matching candidates and companies more complex, but also creates opportunities for engineers who can navigate multiple cultures. 💡 My advice to employers: Be clear on whether language is a must-have or a nice-to-have. It could be the difference between filling your role in weeks vs months.
