In 1949, Alfred Winslow Jones, a former journalist turned investor, launched a fund that combined long investments with short sales and modest leverage. It was a simple idea at the time, but it became the blueprint for what we now call a hedge fund. 75 years later, equity long/short remains one of the most widely used strategies in the industry, representing close to 20% of hedge fund assets according to the Aurum Hedge Fund Data Engine. But the landscape has expanded dramatically: market neutral stock pickers, sector specialists, global funds, and large multi-PM platforms all now sit under the same banner. This new primer takes stock of this evolution. It explains the core approaches, the risk/return trade-offs, the art of shorting, and what allocators should look for when choosing managers. https://bit.ly/4ntCutL #HedgeFunds #EquityLongShort #AssetManagement

Equity long/short has evolved over 75 years into a diverse ecosystem: from sector specialists and market neutral stock selectors to large multi-PM platforms. Aurum’s latest hedge fund strategy primer looks at what unites these funds and what separates them — from financing considerations and manager architecture to turnover, style biases and regional nuances. For allocators, the edge lies in recognising which flavour of equity long/short you are really buying, what risks are embedded, and how it has historically behaved when the tide turns. There’s lots of ways of breaking down the array of equity long/short funds out there. Perhaps the most meaningful differentiator is net market exposure. This newsletter touches on some of the topics explored in Aurum's latest hedge fund strategy primer, which takes a deep dive into equity long/short.

Equity long/short is one of the industry’s oldest strategies and still among the largest, representing close to 20% of the hedge fund industry according to the Aurum Hedge Fund Data Engine. Yet allocators often find the label too broad to be useful. In the latest in Aurum’s series of hedge fund strategy primers, we: • map the strategy into practical buckets by net exposure • unpack the role of gross exposure and leverage • cover what to look for in managers, from pedigree and factor control to liquidity alignment. If you allocate to equity hedge funds, this is a concise field guide to the strategy. https://bit.ly/4ntCutL #hedgefunds #investments #assetmanagement

Aurum have long believed that the true measure of success lies not just in financial returns, but also in how those returns are translated into positive, real-world change. Through its 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁® 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵, donations are structured to proportionately increase as firm AUM increases. Alongside donations from bottom-line profits, Aurum also makes donations from the management fees of its two Embedded Impact Funds, in an effort to create meaningful and real-world tangible impacts. The 2025 ESG Impact Report shares powerful examples of what this means in practice: • 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 𝗨𝗯𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘂 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 – Equipping families across Africa and Asia to support children with neurodisabilities, reaching over 1,100 children in 2024. • 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 – Backing Indigenous-led efforts to protect biodiversity and secure recognition of ancestral lands across South America. • 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 (𝗨𝗞) – Helping 10,000 young people access creative opportunities, skills training, and pathways into work. • 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗦𝗚 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 – Hosted an event which offered a specialised lens into ESG adoption in alternative investments. 2024 was a year of unprecedented challenges — from climate extremes to humanitarian crises — but also one that saw courage, collaboration, and positive change flourish. Aurum’s 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁® 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 ensures that as the business grows, so too does Aurum’s ability to contribute to the world around us. Predominantly through the Aurum Kaleidoscope Foundation, a UK-registered charity, Aurum’s donations continue to grow in line with its assets under management. At the close of 2024, Aurum’s cumulative donations surpassed $𝟰𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻, supporting over 50 projects around the globe. For the second year in a row, AUM-based donations exceeded those made via the Embedded Impact Funds, underscoring the belief in “success shared.” Some highlights from this year’s report include: • 𝗕𝘂𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 – Supporting the creation of 110 hectares of wildflower habitat across the UK to protect pollinators and biodiversity. • 𝗦𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 – Enabling the construction of a new school for children with autism and intellectual disabilities, expanding capacity from 30 to 150 pupils. • 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗱𝗮 𝗭𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 – Helping restore mangroves in Hungry Bay through replanting and storm protection measures. • 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 – 100% of Aurum’s suppliers have committed to environmental sustainability. The past year has been marred by turbulence - geopolitical, environmental, and economic - but it has also been a year of deepened resolve, meaningful collaboration, and powerful impact. Aurum has always believed ESG should be holistic and people-centric. Through its 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁® 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵, Aurum’s growth is directly linked to creating positive change. Donations are primarily channelled via the Aurum Kaleidoscope Foundation, a UK charity supporting organisations and individuals worldwide. In 2024, Aurum reached another milestone: total donations surpassed $43 million, funding 50+ active programmes in environmental and humanitarian causes. For the second year, AUM-based donations exceeded those from management fees — reflecting the belief that as Aurum grows, so must its contributions. Highlights from the latest report: • 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 – Funding helped close Centre Saint Vincent Institution in Rwanda, transitioning children and adults with disabilities to family-based care. • 𝗜𝗨𝗖𝗡 – Donations cover core funding, empowering IUCN to address global biodiversity threats. • 𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲 – Supported immersive storytelling for young people with profound learning disabilities across 60 schools, charities, and hospices. • 𝗣𝗥𝗜 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 – Aurum received the maximum five stars and ranked top of its peer group globally for ‘Indirect – hedge funds’ in the $1–$9.9bn category. You can read more about Embedded Impact and Aurum’s ESG approach in the latest impact report.
