Read this new report from Convergence and Mirova sharing lessons learned from the Mirova Gigaton Fund. Launched in March 2023, the Fund was designed to address structural barriers to private capital mobilization primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa, to some extent South-East Asia and Latin America, and focused on distributed clean energy and climate innovations, with a strong focus on gender inclusivity. Convergence provided grant funding to assist Mirova in addressing the primary challenges and innovations associated with this new blended finance initiative. The Fund serves as a compelling case study on the role of blended finance in accelerating the clean energy transition and climate resilience in underserved markets. 📢 New Call for Research Proposals | Fiscal Tools to Manage Climate-Induced Disaster Risk We’ve just launched a Call for Research Proposals focused on how fiscal policy and tools can help manage climate and disaster risks more effectively in #LatinAmerica and the #Caribbean 🏛️🌧️🌎 This initiative—led by the Fiscal Management Division and the Research Department at the Inter-American Development Bank—aims to equip scholars and policymakers in the region with datasets, evidence-based insights, methodologies, and practical tools to design and implement fiscal strategies that support climate resilience and disaster response, while aligning with national priorities and socioeconomic objectives. We’re inviting proposals from universities, think tanks, and NGOs across the region. Selected studies will receive up to US$25,000 in funding to explore: ✅ The distribution of climate and disaster risks ✅ Their relationship with and impact on fiscal variables ✅ The evaluation of fiscal instruments for risk management ✅ The operational implementation of fiscal tools This call reflects our commitment to generating cutting-edge knowledge and actionable insights for fiscal policy. An estimated 1.2 billion people are at risk from climate-related changes and extreme events like heatwaves, floods and droughts. As economic losses from these events rise, closing the investment gap in climate adaptation will require co-operation to scale up and better align financial flows to support of climate-resilient development. In a new report prepared for the G20 South African Presidency in collaboration with African Development Bank Group and the #OECD examines the multifaceted and interrelated barriers holding back adaptation investment. These include macroeconomic and institutional capacity challenges, impediments to both public and private investment, and limited access to international concessional finance. The report also sets out a series of strategic policy priorities spanning institutional capacity, data availability, domestic policy frameworks, and international cooperation. Finally, a focused analysis on Africa underscores the region’s acute vulnerability to climate risks and presents context-specific opportunities to scale up adaptation finance through targeted, locally appropriate interventions.
