VUL-0: CVE-2024-26627: kernel: scsi: core: Move scsi_host_busy() out of host lock for waking up EH handler
Last modified: 2025-06-19 00:19:08 UTC
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: core: Move scsi_host_busy() out of host lock for waking up EH handler Inside scsi_eh_wakeup(), scsi_host_busy() is called & checked with host lock every time for deciding if error handler kthread needs to be waken up. This can be too heavy in case of recovery, such as: - N hardware queues - queue depth is M for each hardware queue - each scsi_host_busy() iterates over (N * M) tag/requests If recovery is triggered in case that all requests are in-flight, each scsi_eh_wakeup() is strictly serialized, when scsi_eh_wakeup() is called for the last in-flight request, scsi_host_busy() has been run for (N * M - 1) times, and request has been iterated for (N*M - 1) * (N * M) times. If both N and M are big enough, hard lockup can be triggered on acquiring host lock, and it is observed on mpi3mr(128 hw queues, queue depth 8169). Fix the issue by calling scsi_host_busy() outside the host lock. We don't need the host lock for getting busy count because host the lock never covers that. Not security relevant. The machine does a hard lockup if the scenario is encountered, and you can't be more secure than a locked up machine :-) Refute the CVE. It's a bug but definitely _NOT_ security relevant.
Is it possible to trigger the condition to DoS the system?
The only way to trigger this is to put the system under high load. But I would argue that putting the system under high load is in itself a DOS attach; after all, there is not much you can do with the machine as the workload generating the high load is eating up all resources. But really, this is a typical example for the current CVE storm: we are spending _way_ more time discussing the CVE than the actual backport would've done. What a waste of time.
(In reply to Hannes Reinecke from comment #6) > The only way to trigger this is to put the system under high load. > But I would argue that putting the system under high load is in itself a DOS > attach; after all, there is not much you can do with the machine as the > workload generating the high load is eating up all resources. This very much depends on what you consider a high load. From the CVE point of view it is more important whether any untrusted and unprivileged user can trigger the condition and cause even more harm. Or do you imply that the load necessary to trigger the condition is sufficient to render the machine unusable? The above is really too vague to make any impact assessment. Could you be more specific Hannes?
You would need to create an I/O load which utilizes _all_ queues (and, by inference, all CPUs) who then eat up all possible I/O tags. Generating an I/O load on all CPUs doesn't leave processing power for anything else, so that alone is pretty much a DOS attack. (If there was, the CPUs doing other work would leave the HBA enough space to recover by sending completions, so the issue won't occur.) So really, no. If we were going down that route we would need to declare _all_ performance testing a DOS attack.
So as far as I understand the code the problematic function scsi_eh_wakeup() gets called when some SCSI command fails which is not easy for an attacker to trigger - it means the device got stuck and didn't reply, or the cable got disconnected, or maybe the media went bad - but generally these are things out of attackers control. And when scsi_eh_wakeup() is called in such events, we *also* need to have many requests in flight against the device so that all the contention on host_lock while calling scsi_host_busy() from scsi_eh_wakeup() causes hardlockup. So overall I tend to agree with Hannes this is impractical to exploit even as a DoS and I'd just backport this as a part of git-fixes process.
No security bug. Back to sec-team.
