In one hour, our community came together to make a difference. Lionheart Foundation’s 13th annual Youth Power Hour, hosted at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, raised vital funds in support of youth mental health initiatives through the Lionheart Foundation. It was an afternoon filled with connection, purpose, and hope—proof that when people unite around a shared cause, even sixty minutes can spark lasting change. Thank you to everyone who gave their time, energy, and generosity to support the wellbeing of young people in our city.

Accessibility isn’t just about removing barriers. It is about creating spaces where everyone feels they belong. That was the heart of Alberta Employment First Network's DEAM IDEA Conference, hosted at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, where attendees shared what true accessibility means in their lives and work. As a venue for all persons, the CTCC is committed to putting accessibility into action. We know accessibility is a journey, and we are dedicated to continuing that work over the long term. We are grateful to have hosted this important conversation, and better understand how we create a space that welcomes everyone.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we share a work of art that asks us to look closer and remember. Local Tsuut’ina artist Keegan Starlight created a painting for the CTCC that depicts the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers as it once was, when only Indigenous peoples lived on this land. Two hawks circle above, carrying prayers to Creator and watching over the camp below. This piece will soon be on display in our South Building, a reminder that reconciliation begins with acknowledging the stories that came before us and the responsibilities we carry today.

The strongest leaders welcome straight talk, even when it’s hard to hear. Our President and CEO, Kurby Court, MA., CCP, knows that trust and curiosity create a culture where honesty drives every decision. Because leadership isn’t about always being right, it’s about creating a safe space where the truth can rise.
The more responsibility you take on within an organization, the less truth naturally reaches you. People simply assume the CEO’s word is final. That’s why one of the most important phrases among my leadership team at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre is this: “I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t tell you this.” When I hear it, I sit down and listen. Leadership is more than a title or a claim to authority. It’s about creating space for people to tell you the truth. And not the rosy-coloured picture they think you want to hear, but good, old-fashioned straight talk. Even when it’s hard to hear. Especially when it’s hard to hear. If you haven’t created that system among your peers, you’re missing out on one of the strongest checks and balances needed for accountable leadership. It comes down to the trust triangle—empathy, authenticity, and logic. Are all three firing in the conversation? When those three components are present between myself and my team, the truth rises to the surface. If not, I risk making decisions on half-truths, defaulting to authority instead of true leadership. And that kind of leadership trickles down through the organization. If I model defensiveness, my team will mirror it. If I model curiosity and an openness to being challenged, they’ll reflect that, too. It’s uninspiring, isn’t it? To follow a leader who always has to be right, shuts down dissent, and mistakes fear for respect. I often come back to a simple question: If someone took your title away, would people still follow you? Creating space for straight talk, trust, and vulnerability are not soft skills. They’re what separate leaders people have to follow from leaders people want to follow. The next time someone says to you, “I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t tell you this,” understand that it’s not a challenge to your authority. It’s a test of your leadership. The way you respond in that moment will say more about you as a leader than a title ever could.

Say hello to Kim, one of the friendly faces making sure every experience at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre runs smoothly. ✨ After years on the floor at events, Kim was ready for a new challenge, one that let him step back while still staying close to the heart of it all. At the CTCC, he’s found exactly that, along with something he values most: balance. 🤝 What makes working here special for him? The chance to grow in his career while still having time for what matters most outside of work. ⛳️ Away from the CTCC, Kim keeps busy with softball in the summer, badminton in the winter, and golf or skiing whenever he can. Add in kids’ activities like soccer, gymnastics, swimming lessons, and camping trips, and his calendar is always full, though he still makes time for friends, especially at happy hour. Thanks for everything you bring to the team, Kim!
