On Thursday, October 16 until the morning of Friday, October 17, 2025, the hospital will be lit purple in support of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This annual campaign spotlights the many ways people with disabilities contribute to businesses and their communities, helping companies be successful and competitive. This event recognizes and raises awareness about the importance of disability-inclusive hiring, and disability inclusion in business, employment and in the community. The 2022-27 Strategic Plan's Advance Health Equity pillar includes the Accessibility Plan - to promote, provide, and maintain an environment where respect, independence, and dignity are demonstrated at all times to everyone. Additionally, the Increase Joy in Work pillar reflects CMH’s commitment to creating meaningful and enabling work environments that supports physical, psychological, and spiritual needs for all. October is Islamic History Month! Proclaimed by Canadian Parliament in 2007, Islamic History Month (also called Islamic Heritage Month) recognizes the significant contributions of Muslim communities, celebrates cultural diversity, and promotes greater understanding to combat anti-Islamic sentiment. Throughout October, Voices of CMH will feature staff and medical professionals as they share personal stories and reflections for Islamic History Month. #IslamicHistoryMonth #OurCMH Pictured on the left is Asiya K., an ICU nurse who recently marked her 10th anniversary at CMH. With a family history closely tied to this year’s theme of ‘Pioneering Muslim Communities in Canada’, Asiya shares her reflections on the connection between faith and healthcare. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and October 15 is Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day). It’s a time to raise awareness, support those affected, and highlight the importance of early detection and compassionate care. Cambridge Memorial Hospital (CMH) and Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) are honoured to share Natalia’s story. Natalia, one of WRHN’s Nurse Practitioners, bravely faced breast cancer. She received her treatment at the WRHN Cancer Centre and underwent breast reconstruction surgery at CMH. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy, dignity, and compassion in healthcare. Natalia recalls a deeply meaningful moment when a physician at WRHN Cancer Centre sat with her and carefully mapped out her treatment plan, helping an overwhelming process feel manageable. Natalia encourages women of all ages to know their bodies, pay attention to changes, and advocate for themselves. Early detection saves lives, so if something doesn’t feel right, reach out to your healthcare provider. Breast reconstruction was an important part of her healing, helping her feel whole again and giving her strength to move forward. She hopes her story inspires others to explore their options, ask questions, and make informed choices about their care. On BRA Day, in collaboration with Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Program (WWRCP), join us at CMH for an educational session on breast reconstruction options. Hear directly from expert surgeons, learn from patient stories, and explore your choices in a supportive, community-focused environment. Register now: bit.ly/BRA_Event This month, and always, CMH, WRHN, and Waterloo WWRCP stand with patients, families, and team members affected by breast cancer. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #BreastReconstructionAwarenessDay #CMH #WRHN #WWRCP

September 30 is Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. Today, Canadians are invited to wear orange in solidarity and remembrance of the thousands of Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families, and communities. It is also a time for reflection and education about the legacy of residential schools and taking action towards healing and a better future. CMH’s journey toward Truth & Reconciliation continues year-round, not just in September, through our Truth & ReconciliACTION Plan. Some examples of ongoing initiatives include updating our Smudging Policy, partnering with local Indigenous artists to create artwork for the hospital, promoting Indigenous Cultural Safety Training opportunities, and continuing to foster meaningful relationships with local Indigenous communities and organizations. #OurCMH #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters #NDTR #TruthAndReconciliation
