Federal, provincial and territorial health ministers missed an opportunity this week to provide Canadians with tangible solutions to the many barriers to accessing care across the country. The CMA met with health ministers in Calgary to discuss ways to reduce barriers that prevent doctors from working where they're needed most and to support our health workforce from coast to coast. Canadians and their providers deserve better. We can do better. 🔗 Our statement: https://lnkd.in/esi8bSKM

The CMA is on the ground in Calgary for the meeting of Canada’s health ministers. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve health care access for all Canadians. We know the solutions. Let’s clear the path for doctors to work where and when they’re needed — and create the conditions to recruit and retain the health professionals Canada needs now. #CDNhealth #CDNpoli

Canadian Medical Association reposted this

The CMA and The College of Family Physicians of Canada | Le Collège des médecins de famille du Canada are calling on the Ontario government to reconsider its new residency eligibility rule, which prevents IMGs who didn't attend high school in Ontario from applying in the first round of residency training. At a time when 6.5 million Canadians are without a family doctor, restrictive policies like this risk further destabilizing family medicine programs. We're calling for thoughtful consultation to ensure Canada's residency system supports, rather than hinders, the next generation of physicians. Looking forward to seeing Dr. Jesse Kancir take the stage at the Canadian Conference on Physician Health this week for a panel discussion on how diverse perspectives build connection and trust in Canada's health care system. Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement, Dr. Kancir!
What does innovation look like in a smaller health system? For Dr. Jesse Kancir, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health in Nova Scotia and one of the inaugural Tim Smith Health Leadership Scholarship recipients, it’s about proximity, possibility, and purpose. Through the National Health Fellows program, supported by the Canadian Medical Association, Jesse joined a national cohort of leaders committed to advancing equity and innovation in health care. “This program is giving me the space and motivation to lead with purpose.” Applications for the 2026 scholarship have been extended to November 1. We surveyed over 3,300 doctors across Canada on their well-being. Questions explored working conditions, professional experiences and the broader medical culture. While physician wellness indicators appear to be improving since the pandemic, it’s clear we still have a long way to go. Now's the time to lean into the solutions to ensure physicians are safe, healthy and well. Swipe 👉 for the preliminary results from the 2025 National Physician Health Survey.
