Earlier this month, CarboMat Inc. was pleased to participate in the Bitumen Carbon Fiber Conference and Workshop hosted by Alberta Innovates at InnoTech Alberta in Edmonton, AB where various leaders both the carbon fiber and oil sands industry came together to discuss the growth of our innovations for commercial-scale operations. In this conference, we were able to share a glimpse of all our recent achievements in our low-cost sustainable carbon fiber technology and how we aim to commercialize this technology to showcase the best Canadian innovation in leading markets. Thanks to Paolo G. Bomben Bryan Helfenbaum John Zhou Murray Gray and TriDung(T.-D.) Ngo, Ph.D. for leading all the important sessions and fostering impactful discussions. As CarboMat Inc. continues to scale-up this innovative technology, we are in constant need for federal and provincial support to drive this Canadian innovation to commercial success. With a clear vision to build the first Canadian carbon fiber manufacturing plant, we need strategic and investment support from government and oil sands industries to fuel this race towards success. Last week, the CarboMat Inc. team was honored to host the brilliant minds from Atlantis Research Labs Inc. (Vladimir Mravcak & Leighton Gall), Jerry Zhang, and Deepak Lodhia for a comprehensive tour of our facilities. Together, we explored how CarboMat Inc.’s low-cost, sustainable carbon fiber and battery anode material technologies can reshape the aerospace and UAV industries—driving efficiency, reducing emissions, and enabling next-generation performance. Beyond the technology, we also had an inspiring conversation about forging extensive partnerships to strengthen Canada’s position in the global race for sustainable advanced materials. Our shared vision is clear: build a resilient Canadian ecosystem that can serve the rapidly growing composites and battery materials markets, while making innovation both sustainable and scalable. We are excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible together

Breakthrough Announcement: We are excited to share that CarboMat Inc. has been chosen as one of the winners under the Advanced Materials Challenge call 2025 by Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) and has secured a funding of $1,050,000 to scale-up and further develop a bitumen-derived low-cost sustainable battery anode material technology. As global energy demand rapidly approaches terawatt-hour (TWh) scale, building secure and sustainable battery material supply chains in North America has become more urgent than ever. This strategic funding from ERA will enable us to: - Scale up production of low-cost, sustainable hard carbon and synthetic graphite - Support both the rapidly growing Na-ion and Li-ion battery markets - Demonstrate pilot-scale production capacity - Conduct comprehensive coin, pouch, and cylindrical cell testing in collaboration with customers and battery experts - Lay the groundwork for our first commercial-scale facility Thanks to our awesome partners Peak Energy UNIGRID Battery Pacific Northwest National Laboratory ExxonMobil Cenovus Energy Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) MEG Energy Corp. Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and InnoTech Alberta for their continuous support in this exciting journey. Rebecca Schulz Brian Jean Nate Glubish Danielle Smith Mark Carney
With an investment of over $1 million from ERA, CarboMat Inc. will scale up its production of battery anode materials derived from asphaltenes, a byproduct of bitumen upgrading. It’s estimated that this technology could reduce GHG emissions by 35-45 per cent compared to conventional battery anode materials. "This financial support from the Government of Alberta through ERA is a major boost to our efforts in developing high-performance battery materials from Alberta’s bitumen byproducts. It’s a strong vote of confidence in homegrown innovation that supports both economic growth and environmental stewardship." - Md Golam Kibria, PhD, P.Eng., Director and Co-founder, CarboMat Inc.
