The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of California was established in 1972, and is dedicated to the defense of clients charged with federal offenses. The Federal Defender is authorized and funded pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act, ("CJA") 18 USC § 3006A, et seq. The caseload ranges from petty offenses, to multi-defendant drug conspiracies, sophisticated computer crimes, and international smuggling cases. The Northern District of California stretches along the coast from Monterey County in the south to the Oregon border in the north. It includes the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Sonoma.

We have another career opportunity for a district-wide Paralegal for our district (Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco). The Paralegal will work closely with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive legal and administrative assistance at all stages of federal criminal proceedings. The paralegal must possess exceptional technological skills. The paralegal is responsible for organizing and analyzing discovery, maintaining well organized and searchable electronic case files, reviewing documents, and compiling and providing evidence summaries to attorneys and case teams, coding facts, and creating case databases, and providing litigation support at evidentiary and motion hearings, trials, and appeals. The paralegal will provide additional general support to case teams, including coordinating and providing information to experts. This position offers the opportunity to engage in meaningful work while developing specialized skills in federal criminal defense.
