Behind the scenes of a milestone for circular construction in Canada! Kiwi Innovation and VEMA Deconstruction (both participants in Light House’s Circular Construction Accelerator) have just built Canada's first prefabricated home made with 80% reclaimed wood. Featured on CTV News and Global News, the three-storey, 3,700-square-foot Burnaby home showcases how reclaimed materials from Vancouver’s past - including wood from a 1960s home and even the 1926 UBC firehall - can be transformed into the buildings of the future. By reusing nearly 18,000 kilograms of reclaimed lumber, the project avoids significant landfill waste while reducing carbon emissions and preserving craftsmanship. 250+ pieces of sheet goods are looking for their next project...any takers? 🔁 The BMEx team completed a Material Efficiency Assessment at West Isle Industries, a Langford-based millwork studio, helping them inventory and list 250+ surplus sheet goods for resale on the BMEx Marketplace. These materials are perfect for millwork and fabrication projects, with a wide range of sizes, finishes, and colours available at great prices (offers accepted!). West Isle is eager to connect with local makers, contractors, and businesses who can put these materials to use and keep them in circulation rather than sending them to waste. In just half a day, the BMEx team conducted the assessment, catalogued the inventory, and prepared materials for resale. When materials pile up, BMEx can do the work to identify, list, and move your leftover inventory, offcuts, or surplus stock. 🔗 Register on the BMEx Marketplace to browse West Isle's listings: https://lnkd.in/gjm3TBVR Or register your business for a Material Efficiency Assessment: https://lnkd.in/dP94J-EY #CircularEconomy #BMEx #MaterialReuse #SustainableDesign #VictoriaBC #Construction #VancouverIsland #Millwork #LangfordBC Ben Clark

Gil Yaron, Light House Director of Strategic Initiatives, moderated the panel “Disrupting the Demolitionist: Building a Circular Future Against the Odds” at this year’s Coast Waste Management Association Conference in Victoria, B.C. The session brought together industry leaders Beverley Dondale (The ReUse People of Canada), Rhiannon Moore (City of Victoria BC), Nabil Drissi El Bouzaidi (EcoWaste), and Michelle Mazzotta (Kiwi Innovation) to explore how the sector can move beyond demolition toward reuse, salvage, and reclamation to advance a more sustainable built environment. It’s exciting to see the growing momentum behind turning demolition waste into opportunity, and how collaboration across sectors is helping shape a circular future in B.C. and beyond!

Canada’s construction industry generates a massive but often invisible stream of plastic waste. Much of this waste is clean, recyclable packaging that still ends up in landfill. Our recent Construction Plastics Initiative (CPI) Benchmarking Study, featured below in Roofing Supply Pro by the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, reveals just how under-tracked and under-managed this waste stream remains - and offers a data-driven roadmap for change. "Construction plastics are one of Canada’s most overlooked waste streams. This study gives us the evidence we need to understand the challenge, and the CPI offers the pathway to progress." - Gil Yaron, Managing Director, Circular Innovation at Light House. Read the full feature below!
A study by Light House shows the impact the Canadian construction industry has on the environment with plastics and how building material suppliers can become a force that properly manages plastic waste.

We’re proud to see Timber Tiles, a participant in Light House’s Circular Construction Accelerator (CCA), featured in Canadian Forest Industries this month for their innovative work turning underutilized hemlock into high-value architectural wall tiles. Based in Port Alberni and owned by the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, Timber Tiles is redefining the value of wood products while embodying the sacred principle of ʔuuʔałuk: Caring for present and future generations through respect for the land and natural world. As co-founder mark Anson explains, “Using natural materials in the places where we live and work provides innate natural benefits - lower blood pressure, greater productivity, fewer sick days, and better retention of information.” And from Chief John Jack: “Every tile represents our commitment to environmental responsibility, zero waste, and economic resilience.” We’re inspired to see Timber Tiles leading with innovation, community, and circular design, and showing how local materials and Indigenous partnership can reshape the future of Canada’s building industry!
