Over the past six years, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government has been leading the way in creating a network of Métis-led Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs), spaces where Métis Citizens, and all people, can connect with the land and help protect it for generations to come. These privately owned lands, once vulnerable to development, are now protected through Métis stewardship — ensuring native plants, animals, and habitats thrive while providing opportunities for public access, education, and cultural sharing. A strong Métis Nation embracing Métis rights.
About us
In 1928, Alberta Métis began organizing to advance Métis self-determination and self-government in the province, leading to the creation of the Métis Nation of Alberta. In November 2022, Métis Citizens overwhelmingly ratified a constitution to establish the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. In September 2023, the first election under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Constitution was held. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is now the government of the Métis Nation within Alberta and is recognized as such by the Government of Canada through a self-government agreement signed between the parties in 2023. Currently, there are over 70,000 Métis Albertans registered as Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. As per the National Definition of Métis, ‘Métis means a person who self-identifies as a Métis, is distinct from other aboriginal peoples, is of historic Métis Nation ancestry, and is accepted by the Métis Nation.’ Historic Métis Nation ‘means the Aboriginal people then known as Métis or half-breeds who resided in the Historic Métis Nation Homeland.’ Métis Nation ‘means the Aboriginal people descended from the Historic Métis Nation, which now comprised of all Métis Nation peoples and is one of the “aboriginal peoples of Canada” as defined in s.35 of the Constitution Act 1982.’

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Samuel Bird. As they face the heartbreaking loss of someone so young and full of promise, our thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time. With the discovery of Samuel’s remains yesterday, there is now an answer to the question that has weighed so heavily on all of us. While this is not the outcome anyone had hoped for, we are grateful that he has been found. Though Samuel was not a Citizen of our Nation, we mourn alongside his community and those who knew and loved him. We also recognize the long and difficult road ahead for his family as they navigate a legal system that too often retraumatizes, and fails to adequately support, Indigenous victims, survivors, and their families. We remain deeply grateful to the community members, volunteers, and everyone who came together, those who searched, prepared meals, and stood beside the family in hope and solidarity.
