Last week, awe met innovation. We had the extraordinary honor of hosting Nobel Prize winner Dr. Donna Strickland to officially launch our new MedTech Innovation Suite: The Strickland Space. A proud Canadian physicist, Dr. Strickland earned her undergraduate degree at McMaster University and her PhD at the University of Rochester. Here, she co-developed her Nobel Prize Winning work, chirped pulse amplification (CPA), with Dr. Gérard Mourou. CPA stretches an ultrashort laser pulse in time, amplifies it safely, then compresses it into an ultra-intense burst. This technique enables high-power lasers without damaging equipment—revolutionizing laser physics and powering everything from industrial micromachining to laser eye surgery. In 2018, Dr. Strickland became the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, joining Marie Curie and Maria Goeppert Mayer. Two more women have joined this distinguished group since: Andrea Ghez and Anne L’Huillier. Beyond her brilliance, what stood out was her joy of learning. Dr. Strickland often said, “Physics is fun”—a reflection of the curiosity and passion that drives her work. The Strickland Space was created in that same spirit: • Curiosity • Collaboration • Courage to explore new possibilities More than a hub for MedTech innovation, The Strickland Space is a zone for connection, and pushing boundaries with our teams, OEM partners, and global collaborators. We’re grateful to Dr. Strickland for joining us to launch this space—and for reminding us what’s possible when bold ideas meet fearless curiosity and a love of discovery. The surgical landscape is shifting—fast. Medical device solutions must adapt to ASC settings—or risk falling behind. ASCs (ambulatory surgery centers) aren’t a trend. They’re a business model that's redefining how and where orthopaedic surgery happens. What sparked the shift towards ASCs? ✅ Rising hospital costs drove payers and providers to seek more economical options ✅Insurance reimbursements for orthopaedic procedures have stagnated—or dropped—forcing some surgeons to do more for less ✅COVID-19 accelerated the move as elective surgeries paused and providers pivoted fast ✅Surgeons wanted greater control over OR access and scheduling What’s sustaining it? ✅ASCs are optimized for minimally invasive procedures with same-day discharge ✅Patients value convenience, cost transparency, and a faster return home ✅ASCs report higher patient satisfaction and lower infection rates ✅Surgeons benefit from efficient workflows, smaller teams, higher case volumes, and in some cases, ownership and profitability ✅Medicare is approving more procedures for ASCs, including those with greater complexity, further fueling growth What does that mean for MedTech? Surgeons in ASC environments need tools that: ✅Fit compact OR footprints ✅Support lean, high-efficiency teams ✅Deliver precise, repeatable outcomes ✅Align with cost-conscious care models ✅Are innovative and support minimally invasive procedures At NDI (NDI (Northern Digital Inc.), we recognize how the ASC model is changing surgical care. We're supporting new and existing partners as they adapt. This includes providing technology designed to meet the specific demands of outpatient settings. The Polaris® Lyra optical camera delivers high-speed, sub-millimeter tracking in a compact form factor—engineered to perform without compromise in space-constrained environments like ASCs. ASCs are reshaping surgery—and surgical technology must meet the moment. • Most career advice sounds like it came from a fortune cookie. But yesterday, NDI’s President, David Rath, gave us the kind that sticks—candid, earned, and real. It wasn’t polished. It wasn’t rehearsed. These were honest lessons from someone who’s walked the road—and is still walking it. Yesterday was the kickoff of The Leadership Exchange—NDI’s new series where we sit down with members of our executive team for unscripted, story-driven conversations about their career journeys: Where they started, what shaped them, and what they’ve learned along the way. Dave shared the three principles that shaped his leadership and continue to guide his path: 1️⃣ Be curious 2️⃣ Say yes 3️⃣ Put in the work ❓Be curious — Dive in. Ask questions. Stay open. Be a Life Long Learner. Curiosity fuels growth. It opens doors, reveals blind spots, and keeps you learning at every stage of your career. ✅ Say yes — Especially when you're unsure. Most of us don’t feel fully ready. But when someone else believes in you—when they ask you to step up—that belief is often what helps you find your own. Saying yes is how you stretch, grow, and become. ✍ Put in the work — No shortcuts, no magic pill. You show up. You put in the reps. That’s how you build momentum, earn trust, and keep learning. Lifelong learning isn’t a trend—it’s a mindset. Huge thank-you to Sarah Sosnoski, for leading the conversation with care and curiosity—asking thoughtful questions, listening, and bringing out the best in Dave’s story. The Leadership Exchange is honest. Human. High-impact. Because leadership isn’t a title—it’s a journey. Stay tuned for our next Leadership Exchange! #Leadership #MedTech #MedicalDevices #Career
