About us
Established in 1924, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) serves as the voice of the province’s public hospitals, supporting them through advocacy, knowledge translation and member engagement, labour relations, and data and analytics with the goal of helping hospitals build a better health system. The OHA is also attuned to the broader strategic questions facing the future of the province’s health care system and we work to ensure Ontario’s hospitals have a voice in shaping this longer-term vision.

Ontario hospitals are leaders in efficiency — but rising demand is pushing the system to its limits. A major pressure point is high numbers of alternate level of care (ALC) patients — those waiting in hospital beds for more appropriate care in long-term care, rehab, complex continuing care or home and community care. In 2024, ALC volumes hit record highs. The impact? ALC patients don’t receive the care they need in the right setting. This isn’t just a hospital issue — it’s a system-wide challenge. Long-term solutions require: ✅ New funding models ✅ More services outside hospitals ✅ Holistic, strategic planning Efficiency must be matched with capacity because timely care shouldn't be the exception. Too many trauma patients never make it to the hospital in time. At St. Michael’s Hospital, Dr. Johannes von Vopelius-Feldt and Dr. Sheldon Cheskes are proposing a new trauma response model, based on a modelling study, that pairs doctors with paramedics to bring critical care directly to the scene. Through mobile critical care units, these teams could deliver life-saving treatment up to 30 minutes earlier. “We want to get to patients a lot earlier in their journey,” says Dr. Johannes von Vopelius-Feldt, noting research shows that 70 per cent of trauma deaths in Ontario occur before people get to hospital. “We want to reach those patients that maybe would have never made it.” Across the province, hospitals are finding new ways to deliver the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
