Changing the Paradigm of Cellular Preservation
About us
PanTHERA CryoSolutions, now part of BioLife Solutions, is a Canadian corporation that designs and manufactures cryopreservation solutions for cells, tissues and organs for research and clinical markets. Our patented ice recrystallization inhibitor (IRI) technology exceeds competitors' products by providing superior cryopreservation and increasing post-thaw cell recovery and function for our customers. The technology enables the use of less costly storage and transportation systems limiting liquid nitrogen use for some cell therapy applications. PanTHERA’s mission is to apply its scientific excellence to the development of evidence-based products that control ice crystal formation and protect cells, tissues, and organs from freezing damage as well as reducing toxicity, improving stability and post-thaw functionality. As a forward-looking organization we are constantly expanding our technology to contribute to improving cell-based research, agriculture, biodiversity preservation, aquaculture, and human medicines.

Cryopreserved cell products often face transient warming events (TWEs) during biobanking and transport. These events can compromise cell recovery and function. 🌡️ In a new study published in the Journal of Thermal Biology (Elsevier/ScienceDirect), Jason Acker, PhD, and two other colleagues from the University of Alberta examine the impact of different nucleation temperatures and cryoprotectant formulation on ice crystal growth in a T cell model. ❄️ The results show that using HES + DMSO as a cryoprotectant agent while carefully controlling the nucleation temperature enhances the cell’s resilience to TWEs. This combination protects cell viability and product quality. 🛡️ While incorporating an ice inhibitor is ideal for reducing ice recrystallization and further improving cell viability, this study shows that other alternative methods can be beneficial at protection against TWEs. Members of the PanTHERA team will be at Life Sciences Week in Edmonton this year! Stay tuned for more details...
Life Sciences Week (Sept. 22 - 26, 2025) is Alberta’s province-wide celebration of innovation, discovery, and collaboration in health and life sciences. This week of activities is made possible thanks to the hard work and leadership of API, who bring together partners across the province to highlight the strength and potential of Alberta’s life sciences ecosystem. BioAlberta is proud to contribute by hosting our flagship event, the Health & Life Sciences Showcase, on September 25 in Edmonton. With panels, networking, and an Awards Dinner featuring keynote speaker Timothy Caulfield, HLSS adds to the momentum of Life Sciences Week, and provides a chance to connect with the people shaping Alberta’s future in life sciences. 👉 Explore the full week: lifesciencesweek.ca 🎟️ Register for HLSS: https://lnkd.in/gybszpeD #LifeSciencesWeek #LifeSciencesAB #HLSS2025 #LSW2025

This blog post features information from Jason Acker on how even short warming events can lead to ice recrystallization and negatively affect cell health. Thankfully there are solutions that can help protect your cells.
At The Cell Summit ’25 event, we heard a common thread among the speakers and attendees that has not received as much attention in the cell and gene therapy industry – Transient Warming Events (TWEs) 🌡️ A TWE is when a cryopreserved sample is exposed to warmer-than-intended temperatures for a short period of time. 🌡️ A small temperature deviation may seem unimportant, but even brief exposure to higher temperatures, multiple times throughout a sample’s journey can induce cell stress, increase ice crystal growth, and cause many other issues. 🌡️ These temperature fluctuations can greatly affect cell viability and quality! Read our latest blog post to find out what causes TWEs and how you can reduce sample exposure to these risks. 🧊 https://lnkd.in/e9rTpXZv #cellviability #cryopreservation #icerecrystallization #cellhealth #transientwarming Image credit: Acker, J.P.
