  • 🎙️ Out now: Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) Healthcare Change Makers podcast featuring Dr. Mike Heenan, a powerful episode that explores empathy, purpose and why it’s so important for him to do more to prevent violence against healthcare workers.   From policy to facilities, Mike reminds us that every role in healthcare contributes to the well-being of others. It's not just a job — it's a calling. As well as his reminder on purpose, “When you ask yourself ‘what’s my value proposition?’, it allows you to focus on what gets you up every day. It doesn’t look like a transactional job, but a career calling.”   🎧 Listen here, https://lnkd.in/gZMs6c4a

A new episode of HIROC’s Healthcare Change Makers podcast is out now! Catch our interview with Dr. Mike Heenan of St. Joseph's Health System and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Listen: https://lnkd.in/gHVkZ4vb We touch on Mike’s career path and how no matter who you are, you can have an impact on someone’s life. But we also dive deep into the work St. Joe’s is doing around workplace violence and the steps they are taking as a learning organization. It’s a candid and inspiring conversation so if you have the time, we highly recommend adding this to your playlist. Last week, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, St. Joseph's Home Care and St. Joseph's Villa, Margaret’s Place Hospice & St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation launched our new shared strategic plan: An ambitious, shared approach to the next five years of caring for our communities and planning for the health care opportunities and challenges of the future. Our new mission, Unstoppable Compassion, is grounded in the foundation established by the Sisters of St. Joseph--compassionate, innovative care delivered when and where people need it. 🔷 Our new plan has three strategic directions: advance health, amplify impact and invest in teams. Grounded by our foundational commitments to innovate, champion equity diversity and inclusion as well as Indigenous Reconciliation, we will relentlessly pursue innovative solutions, academic excellence and research to help our teams and the communities we serve. Whether it’s bringing joy or comfort to patients at the bedside in hospital, caring for those who need a little extra help in the home or helping seniors live more independently in their community or as long-term care residents, we are delivering holistic, compassionate care. 🔷 With this plan, we will improve access to high-quality care by identifying and removing barriers through thoughtful collection of data and listening to the communities we serve. To deliver compassionate care every day we will grow and strengthen partnerships, improve our facilities, ensure our programs meet the evolving needs of the communities we serve and ensure our teams have the tools and resources they need. 🔷 From serving our patients in hospital, home, long-term care or in the community, to partnering with local and regional institutions to deliver exceptional patient care and experiences, we are delivering across the continuum of care. We are supporting our health care teams who show up every day ready to make a difference. In research, discovery and educational partnerships with major academic institutions, we are training and growing future leaders in innovation and quality care for everyone. 🔷   This plan was shaped by the contributions of many. Physicians, staff, learners, leaders, patients, residents, clients, volunteers and community partners of St. Joe’s created this together, through dialogue, openness, readiness for change and a bold vision for the future of our organizations and the people we serve with compassion and dignity.    👉 To learn more about our shared strategic plan, visit https://lnkd.in/gP_5-gWz.

  • Retired chartered accountant and St. Catharines resident Thomas Kevill has donated $10 million to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation, marking one of Ontario’s largest philanthropic investments in eye health and ophthalmology. The gift will accelerate groundbreaking research led by Dr. Varun Chaudhary, Chief of Ophthalmology at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, aimed at combating two of Canada’s leading causes of blindness (Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Retinopathy (DR)) through the application of AI algorithms designed to speed up diagnoses, find biomarkers to predict disease development, and deliver personalized medicine. This donation builds on Mr. Kevill’s earlier contributions in 2023 and 2024 totaling more than $1 million to support and help to equip the Advanced Vitreoretinal Imaging (AVI) Lab at St. Joe's King Campus. To recognize Mr. Kevill's generosity, St. Joe’s has announced that the Regional Eye Institute will henceforth be known as the Thomas Kevill Regional Eye Institute. “We’re delighted to recognize this remarkable gift by associating Mr. Kevill’s name with the Eye Institute that restored his vision and cares for the eye health of more than 1.4 million people across the Hamilton, Brantford and Niagara regions,” says Sera Filice, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation. • “As health care providers, it’s our responsibility to try and help pregnant persons to understand what the literature tells us and why we are making the recommendations that we are.” Dr. Susan Ellis, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at St. Joe’s Hamilton, spoke to the Globe and Mail about concerns that pregnant patients may opt against taking acetaminophen due to unproven claims linking its use during pregnancy to the development of autism in children. Medical experts and health organizations have rejected the claims, emphasizing current scientific literature does not support a link between acetaminophen and neurological conditions like autism or ADHD. Ellis says she feels for pregnant patients as respiratory virus season approaches and encouraged them to get their flu shot and RSV vaccine to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses.
