Thames Talbot Land Trust is excited to collaborate on this great conservation initiative. Looking forward to working with Scouts Canada and Ontario Conservation Accelerator to protect some amazing places in southwestern Ontario! 🌿
Scouts Canada and the Ontario Conservation Accelerator are proud to announce a powerful new partnership that has the potential to permanently protect thousands of acres of land across Ontario, while ensuring ongoing use for Scouts youth ⛺ As Scouts Canada strategically transitions a portion of its land portfolio, they are prioritizing two things: ✅ Ongoing access to the outdoors for young people ✅ Long-term protection of ecologically important properties That’s where the Ontario Conservation Accelerator comes in 🌲 OCA will bring its conservation expertise, broad network of trusted environmental partners, and fundraising support to help ensure these lands remain wild, healthy, and accessible for generations to come. This collaboration safeguards some of Ontario’s most stunning natural habitats and supports Scouts Canada’s mission to deliver unforgettable outdoor adventures and nature-based learning. Scouts Canada and OCA believe this effort can be a true “win-win”: for youth, and for nature – as well as for the future of our shared landscapes. Green Bay Scout Camp; photo by Kristyn Ferguson

It just feels so amazing to stand on a property that you helped protect, and celebrating with wonderful friends like Wendy Cridland (Long Point Basin Land Trust) and Daria Koscinski (Thames Talbot Land Trust ) who did all the heavy lifting to make this project a reality, is the cherry on top! What a glorious day on the Hawk Cliff Expansion project. The words “protected forever” just feel so good!

🎉 Thames Talbot Land Trust and Long Point Basin Land Trust celebrated the successful completion of the Hawk Cliff Woods Expanding Nature’s Horizons project on Saturday, July 26, 2025. Over 120 people joined us for speeches, refreshments, and hikes to explore the new meadow and envision the possibilities for the space in the future. This event commemorated many accomplishments including: 🌳Raising over $2 million to expand an existing nature reserve and ensure the protection of more nature in Elgin County. 🌱Creating 74 acres of rare grassland habitat, increasing the total acreage of Hawk Cliff Woods to 300 acres of protected land. 🪻Planted more than 60 species of native wildflowers and grasses to create a rich and diverse ecosystem that supports Monarchs, pollinators, birds, and bats. The story of Hawk Cliff Woods started in 2013 when Cheryl Barendregt approached TTLT about protecting the land her family had lived and thrived on since the 1950's. In 2016, Cheryl donated the first 230 acres of Hawk Cliff Woods, which created a place for visitors to connect and thrive with nature as Cheryl and generations of her family have. The expansion project completes Cheryl's original vision of protecting and restoring the entirety of Hawk Cliff Woods. What started as a dream over 10 years ago became a reality. “My grandkids and all the kids out there and all the people out there, I want them to come here and look at the smiling face of the spotted salamander and fall in love. I’m hoping that this will be the place [where] they can do that, and then they’re invested and they will become the next generation that also wants to have a dream.” ♥️ - Cheryl Barendregt Thank you to Andrew Lawton, Andrew Sloan, and Wendy Cridland sharing your enthusiasm and support for the protection of nature. 🫂 We are extremely grateful to our generous supporters and funders that made this all possible! Thank you Government of Canada, Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario, Ontario Conservation Accelerator, Echo Foundation, Ontario Land Trust Alliance, Talka Foundation, The Walter J. Blackburn Foundation, Elgin-St. Thomas Community Foundation, and Wild Birds Unlimited, Inc. as well as all of the many generous individual donors! 📸 Photos by Dave Wake, Joseph O’Neil, Lily Vuong, Skye Martineau, and Sarah Law #ThamesTalbotLandTrust #TTLT #HawkCliffWoods #ExpandingNaturesHorizons #Celebration #NatureRestoration #NatureProtection #NatureExpansion #Grasslands #RareHabitat #Community #Collaboration #ConnectWithNature #FutureGenerations #SpeciesAtRisk #Restoration #Community #WorkingTogether

We did it! Thanks to the support of many generous donors, we have finally completed the expansion of Hawk Cliff Woods! This $2 million conservation project has been a collaborative effort of Thames Talbot Land Trust and Long Point Basin Land Trust. The Hawk Cliff Woods Expansion project has added 30 hectares of protected lands to Hawk Cliff Woods on the shores of Lake Erie – for a combined total of 123 hectares! Through our creation of additional rare grassland habitat, the creation and maintenance of new public trails, and our ongoing habitat restoration, this expansion has secured the protection of the land and wildlife for the good of all beings - including the 15 species at risk that call Hawk Cliff Woods home. We’d like to thank all of our donors and partners for their contributions to this project’s success. Thanks to your generosity and dedication, we’re able to continue to complete projects like these, which ensure protected lands and flourishing wildlife for the future. A special thank you to Cheryl Barendregt – whose original vision of protecting and restoring the entirety of Hawk Cliff Woods is finally complete after more than 10 years of hard work and dedication. We’re excited to continue to work towards a greener future, together. Grateful to have participated in this wonderful event - celebrating a conservation first, visionary conservation leaders and baby turtles! Thank you to Ben Samann and Ontario Conservation Accelerator for hosting us at this beautiful protected area.
The Ontario Conservation Accelerator was thrilled to welcome 100 of our closest friends and partners to a spectacular lakeside gathering on 26,300 acres (10,500 hectares) of land near Bancroft, Ontario. We are so proud to officially announce that this stunning property now holds the record as the largest individually-owned protected area in Canada! 🤯 This milestone wouldn't have been possible without the bold vision of landowner Ben Samann (Land'escapes) and the incredible support of the Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario - Environment, Conservation and Parks | Environnement, Protection de la nature et Parcs. And the best part? We released 30 baby snapping turtles to commemorate this exciting moment in conservation history!! 🐢🐢🐢 Between the canoeing, charcuterie, and wonderful conversations, a feeling was palpable: a growing drive to simply do *more* - faster, creatively and, most importantly, together. We can't wait to keep making huge gains for conservation with all of our incredible partners! Todd McCarthy Ric Bresee Amanda Brodhagen Sydney Pothakos Peter Kendall, C.M.
