When Dr. Pieter Cullis arrived at UBC as an undergraduate physics student in 1964, he had no idea he would one day help develop a scientific breakthrough that would protect billions of people worldwide—or that his work would help fuel BC’s booming biotech sector. The Accelerator Centre and the City of Waterloo are launching a new program to help 45+ MedTech startups excel in our exceptional health innovation ecosystem. 🔗⬇️ The goal of the program is to help startups reach their first round of funding and commercialize their technology. The program also aims to create 100+ skilled jobs in digital health and support long-term partnerships between startups, academic institutions and health organizations. The program comes on the heels of a new hospital announcement in Waterloo. #STEMatLaurier: Tamar Barth, a fourth-year Wilfrid Laurier University Health Sciences student, is studying how to treat human coronavirus using the body's immune system. 🔬 “For my research project, we are adding the same lab-made dsRNA to human lung cells to measure how it affects the virus’s nucleocapsid protein, which is crucial for coronavirus to replicate,” says Barth. “Our goal is to provide further evidence of how the RNA interference pathway targets human coronavirus.” She is inspired by her supervisor, Professor Stephanie DeWitte-Orr, and wants to work in health care someday to make a difference in people's lives. The breakthrough discovery of a brand new antibiotic discovered in the lab of McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences researcher Jon Stokes could unveil a promising new treatment option for millions of people affected by Crohn’s disease and other related conditions. We’re excited to share that three Sunnybrook projects have been generously funded through the new Weston Brain Institute Grants at Sunnybrook which will support research for neurodegenerative conditions. Congratulations to Drs. Nir Lipsman, Meaghan O’Reilly, and Chao Wang on receiving support to advance research in focused ultrasound (FUS) and other areas of brain science. 🎓 Beyond the Thesis with Zhijing Jin, University of Toronto & Max-Planck-Institut für Intelligente Systeme Zhijing Jin is an incoming Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, a CIFAR AI Chair, and a faculty member at the Vector Institute, where she works on LLMs, multi-agent AI, and responsible AI for social good, with a focus on AI safety and scientific discovery. She earned her PhD under the co-supervision of Bernhard Schölkopf (Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems) and Mrinmaya Sachan (ETH Zurich), where she combined NLP and causal inference to develop methods that make large language models more robust, trustworthy, and capable of reasoning about cause and effect.
