The #GovernmentOfCanada is committed to making data more accurate and easier to use. Data and Metadata Reference Standards help ensure data is stored and displayed in a consistent way. This makes it easier for different systems to work together and improves the overall quality of data! TBS recently published two new standards to support better data use: 🗂️ The Metadata Reference Standard for Digital Archival Records helps make sure archived digital records are easier to find, use, and keep safe over time. It follows the 2023 standard from Library and Archives Canada | Bibliothèque et Archives Canada and supports better system compatibility. 📊 The Data Reference Standard (DRS) on Government of Canada Organization Names and Codes provides a list of current GC organization names, each with a unique code. This helps departments describe organizations in a consistent way, even if names change - making government data more accurate and easier to connect across systems. Canada is preparing to invest unprecedented sums — up to $150 billion annually by 2035 — in defence and related technologies. But as this recent Financial Post article by Jim Hinton and Alexis Conrad points out, without a stronger national approach to intellectual property, we risk financing the success of others instead of building our own. Over the last two years I’ve been championing the message: “You can’t talk about productivity & sovereignty without intellectual property”. Hard work alone will not increase Canada’s productivity - we need to own the ideas that underpin the innovative technologies. Correspondingly, sovereignty isn’t measured only by borders and defence spending. It is defined by who owns the source code, patents, data, and algorithms at the foundation of our innovation economy. As Director of ElevateIP Alberta, I see how critical it is that Canada connect programs like ours to a broader national strategy. ElevateIP is ensuring that startups — the very companies creating dual-use technologies in AI, quantum, cleantech, and advanced materials — have the tools and support to protect and commercialize their IP here at home and abroad. This isn’t just about helping entrepreneurs. It’s about ensuring that Canadian research and innovation translates into Canadian-owned companies, jobs, and leverage in global markets. Rogers Communications just launched satellite-to-mobile messaging across Canada. Will consumers pay for it? We’ve got real data that can answer that question. Last week, Rogers unveiled Rogers Satellite, a direct-to-cell (D2C) satellite messaging service powered by LEO satellites from SpaceX’s STARLINK and Lynk Global, integrated with Rogers’ national wireless spectrum. The service is free for all Canadians until October, supporting both regular and emergency text messaging. Future updates will include apps, data, and voice services, including 911 voice support. After the trial: 🔹Free for Rogers Ultimate Plan customers 🔹$15/month for others, with a $5/month discount for beta users in year one You might recall that last year, Shagun Sachdeva Ferran, Lluc P., Christopher Baugh and the team explored early consumer interest in D2C. This year, we’ve gone deeper, with fresh survey data and granular insights across 19 countries. From our early Canadian test sample (perfectly aligned with the Rogers launch): 🔹77% are interested in satellite messaging 🔹11% would pay for messaging or voice 🔹31% would pay for fast satellite mobile internet These are really early findings - fieldwork is ongoing.
