🌍 International networking in the field of environmental research 🤝   We had the honor of welcoming Dr. Hossein Kazemian, Associate Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Northern British Columbia, to our facility in Oberhausen! He took advantage of his visit to a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service, whom he supervises, to familiarize himself with our research in the field of chemical energy storage and to provide insights into his own research.   🌱 In his lecture “Porous Materials for Real-World Environmental Monitoring and Remediation,” he highlighted the development of porous materials – from naturally occurring zeolites, which were mined for gas drying and water softening, to today's metal-organic frameworks, whose pore shapes and chemical properties can be adjusted with Angstrom precision. He also presented case studies on zeolite-based adsorbents for removing trace amounts of emerging pollutants from drinking water streams, as well as micro samplers that capture ppb concentrations of organic compounds from forest fire smoke and withstand repeated regeneration cycles. His key message: porous frameworks are versatile and can serve as integrated platforms for monitoring, quantifying and remediating pollutants in real-world air and water quality conditions.   The visit was an excellent example of international networking within the #DAAD. ♻️ CPCB issues new Guidelines on Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Plants ⚡ The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has released comprehensive guidelines for municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration-based WtE plants. 🔹 Key Highlights: Classifies WtE under Blue Category (Essential Environmental Services). Emphasizes strict segregation & preprocessing to maintain calorific value ≥1500 kcal/kg. Lays down standards for air emissions, leachate, odour, fly ash & bottom ash management. Mandates Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS). Encourages ash recycling in construction and green belt development around plants. Reflections on Non‑Revenue Water (NRW) Management: Having served in a water utility for eight years and working at the frontline of operational efficiency, I’ve come to appreciate that reducing #NRW is truly an all‑hands‑on‑deck effort—it cuts across governance, operations, and customer engagement. In Kenya, the national #NRW average stands at 44%, translating to over Ksh 12.3 billion in lost revenue every year. When I joined our utility back in 2014, the NRW levels were similarly high—above 40%. Through deliberate action, system strengthening, and a shared sense of accountability across all staff, we progressively reduced this to 26% by 2022 and further down to 25% in the 2023/24 period. This journey proves what’s possible when every part of the organization is aligned. Some of the simple things that made the difference: - Plumbers repairing leaks and bursts correctly and on time. - Meter readers ensuring accurate readings and strong data integrity. - Customers trusting the utility, paying for services, and avoiding illegal connections. - Staff committed to reduce #NRW - Management providing the right environment; quality materials, tools, and right policies—and making tough decisions to uphold accountability a. As we talk about smart meters and advanced digital solutions, we must also get the basics right. NRW reduction is not the job of a single department—it demands commitment at every level, backed by strong leadership and a culture of operational excellence. #NRW.

𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘀 – 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 The UNFCCC MEP has released a Draft Standard to address non-permanence and reversal risks in carbon removal activities under Article 6.4.  1. The draft includes guidance on post-crediting monitoring, reporting, and remediation of reversals, as well as clear roles for 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀.  2. Over 𝟭𝟭𝟬 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭,𝟮𝟴𝟬 𝗶𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘀 from diverse stakeholders informed the draft, ensuring broad consultation.  3. Key features include a materiality threshold for minor GHG releases, a narrowed negligible risk range (𝟬.𝟱%-𝟮.𝟱% 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀), and allowance for alternative monitoring approaches under strict conditions.  4. 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 (participant-related) or unavoidable (external events), with mandatory post-crediting monitoring until risk is negligible or remediated.  5. A reversal 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 is being developed to quantify risks and support remediation planning.  6. The Supervisory Body will consider MEP recommendations alongside stakeholder comments at 𝗦𝗕𝗠𝟬𝟭𝟴 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱.  7.
