QDoc Virtual Healthcare’s journey is a Manitoba tech success story worth celebrating. "You can't 'move fast and break things' when human lives are on the line," says AIMI Affiliate Faculty Member Roxana Daneshjou, who develops and tests AI tools for healthcare with careful attention to potential risks. Dr. Daneshjou is enthusiastic about how AI can improve patient access and physician workflows. She envisions AI offering "scalable privilege, where everyone has access to the same information and care as those who are well-versed in the health care system." However, she cautions that significant harm could result from deploying AI prematurely into clinical environments. That's why one of her recent projects—an assessment of large language models (LLMs) for healthcare use—included an 80-expert stress test examining real-world clinical cases and studying inappropriate responses across safety, privacy, hallucinations/accuracy, and bias. Her rigorous approach to AI evaluation exemplifies the responsible implementation principles we champion at AIMI. Dr. Daneshjou's work ensures that AI tools are thoroughly vetted before reaching clinical practice, protecting both patients and healthcare providers. A new clinical trial at SickKids is using molecular profiling to inform targeted therapies for children with hard-to-treat cancers. Led by Canadian Study Chair Dr. Daniel Morgenstern, the OPTIMISE trial is designed to match children, adolescents and young adults with solid #tumours, brain tumours, and #lymphomas with therapies based on the genetic makeup of their tumours. “By integrating genomic science with an adaptable trial design, OPTIMISE represents an important step forward in the quest to bring more individualized treatments to children facing challenging cancers, and a powerful example of how Precision Child Health could help shape the future of #ChildhoodCancer care,” says Morgenstern. SickKids is the first Canadian site after the trial first opened in Australia, with additional sites to open at BC Children’s Hospital and CHU Sainte-Justine later this year.
