Thank you to Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association for the opportunity to present at the AIHA Annual Conference on behalf of S&P Global Commodity Insights. Over 1000 attendees offered valuable policy insights, updates on critical investments, and valuable industry knowledge across key industries in Canada’s most dynamic industrial region. We discussed pressing issues facing the downstream energy and chemicals industries, how best to address the rapidly evolving landscape, and how S&P Global is providing the data and insights to navigate it all. It’s encouraging to see Alberta continue to support chemicals growth by looking deeper into critical minerals, carbon fiber, nano-carbon fiber, and nuclear power. The province is poised to make significant contributions to sustainable growth on a global scale, and we’re excited to join in their journey.

Interested investors, but no lead backers. It’s one of the big problems White Star Capital general partner, Sanjay Zimmermann, sees with flagging early-stage venture capital in Canada. Lots of funds can write $250,000 or $500,000 checks, but they aren’t taking action. Now, White Star hopes to fill in “the missing piece” with a new, $50-million USD seed fund. The VC firm has secured its first close of $25 million. It plans to exclusively lead and co-lead rounds by writing initial checks from $500,oo0 to $2 million.
