"They were talking about reducing light pollution by having this giant light from space," said UBC Physics & Astronomy professor Dr. Aaron Boley. "And it really seems like they're trying to suggest that because it's natural sunlight, it's not like pollution.” https://lnkd.in/gZpMbFjz

UBC researchers are uncovering the role of pyrophilous fungi, tiny fire-loving organisms that appear after burns and help forests rebound. These aren’t your typical mushrooms. Many are vivid, cup-shaped fungi that emerge within weeks of rain. Their hyphae bind soil, prevent erosion, restart nutrient cycles and even help clean pollutants—laying the groundwork for new growth. The same species appear after fires worldwide, even in places untouched for centuries. Dormant in the soil, they awaken only with heat. This fall, as rain returns and burned landscapes green, these vibrant fungi are helping turn devastation into recovery. “Eat a healthy diet [with] lots of fibre, and get some exercise.” We sat down with Dr. Brett Finlay to discuss some of the key take-home messages from his new book, ‘The Microbiome Master Key’. He shared with us how the microbiome can impact our health, and tips for how to ‘hack’ it – backed by science – to promote healthy living and aging. Interested in learning more? Mirror life could revolutionize human health — or it could spell our doom. “The more I think about this, the more I realize that the real concern ought to be with creating life on this side of the mirror,” says The University of British Columbia chemist Dr. David Perrin.
