A few days ago, our two labs #PET (Privacy-Enhancing Technologies) and #HPC (High Performance Computing) came together in Leissigen for our annual retreat: two days dedicated to discussing our #research, exploring new #ideas and surroundings, and getting to know one another better. In the first day, group members shared their latest #research work in their respective groups and brainstormed together about new and bold ideas in #privacy, #security, #highperformancecomputing, #scheduling, etc. In the second day we revisited together how to #getthingsdone and #publish, among other things. And of course, the retreat on the #Thun lakeside wouldn’t have been complete without a #hike and panoramic view of the region in its fall colors. Thanks to everyone in the two labs for bringing such energy, openness, and ideas. We’re looking forward to what’s next. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMI) is taking an innovative step: the latest member is not a human being, but a robot named DiMI. With DiMI, the Universität Basel expands its research and teaching landscape by adding a truly unique member. Recent research draws on physics and geometry to model feature learning in deep neural networks (DNNs), using analogies such as spring-block chains to explain how networks separate data layer by layer. This approach provides a new theoretical framework for understanding how DNNs generalize and perform across tasks. By relating network behavior to mechanical systems, the model offers insights into optimizing training, diagnosing overfitting, and improving generalization—potentially enabling more efficient development and evaluation of large-scale AI models.

🗂️📊 For Linus Hany, it is clear: "Those who have authority over data and its interpretation bear immense responsibility." 🦾 The doctoral student in psychology enjoys drawing conclusions from data. But no single method fits all cases. “Our research shows, for example, that certain machine learning methods distort the meaning of contextual data,” explains Hany. A lack of context can lead to misinterpretations. ♿ Hany’s other passion is sport, which he combines with social engagement. He is president of a sports club for disabled people and, as a sports director, puts together training sessions and events for people with psychological disabilities. 🔬 The «In Focus» series showcases young researchers who are playing an important role in furthering the university’s international reputation.
