The other day, I read a post about Germany’s move to 15-minute spot pricing. Very interesting insights, and of course, a strong focus on flexibility, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. When Germany switched from hourly to 15-minute spot market prices, the entire energy system was exposed to volatility in real time. I just want to add my 2 cents on what this really means for operators: 𝟭. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲. Quarter-hour markets reward assets that can forecast, bid, and dispatch fast, not just big nameplate numbers. 𝟮. 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗘𝗩 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆. These assets can provide a fast response to the grid’s needs and, with smart scheduling, can turn volatility into revenue and lower TCO. 𝟯. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹. Arbitrage plus balancing plus local grid services will matter more than a single flex method. 𝟰. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲. Choose integrators and aggregators who can connect your assets quickly, automate bids, and execute reliably across day-ahead, intraday, and ancillary services. If you have a corporate fleet of EVs, a flexible load or storage, the window is open. My suggestion is to get into the field and see it for yourself.
