Did you know that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plays a key role in achieving the air transport industry’s net-zero carbon emissions by 2050? Since the first commercial SAF offtake agreement in 2013, 81 airlines worldwide have publicly announced 170 deals, and nearly 40% of these airlines have announced more than one agreement. Although airline involvement in SAF agreements continues to grow, the length of these deals is shortening. This shift reflects the expected increase in Hydro-processed Esters and Fatty Acids-based SAF (HEFA) due to its lower cost relative to SAF. The implementation of robust policy support would enable airlines to evaluate longer-term agreements with SAF producers and suppliers, accelerating the diversification of SAF production technologies. To learn more about the importance of #SAF agreements, read the recent issue of the #WeeklyChart 👉 https://bit.ly/40VXHDs #aviation #sustainability #economics

The global aviation profit margin is razor thin at just 3.7% or a little above $7 per passenger per segment, putting revenue management at the heart of any airline. Maximizing airline revenue is intricate and requires the perfect blend of strategy, #pricing, and load factor management. There is a direct impact on the planning and profitability of an airline, making the consequences of learning—or innovating—on the job significant. New simulation tools allow revenue managers to simulate real scenarios in a safe environment. The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Matchmaker platform, facilitates SAF procurement between #airlines and producers by matching requests for supply with offers. When there is a match, airlines and suppliers can connect and take their negotiation offline to agree on specific terms including price and payment terms. The platform addresses: efficiency through a central platform; connectivity of both airlines and suppliers; visibility through comprehensive information incl. available SAF, volumes, feedstock used, location, technology of productions and compliance with CORSIA or EU RED. It is hosted by the #aviation energy hub https://lnkd.in/enQssgG9 #SustainableAviationFuel #SAF #producers #airlines

Why is it that African airlines continue to face a steep cost disadvantage compared to their global peers? As of 2024, the average cost per available tonne-kilometer (CATK) for African carriers stands at almost 140 USD cents— double the average for the rest of the world. One of the key contributors is the region’s aging fleet, with African airlines operating aircraft that are, on average, five years older than the global norm. Additionally, taxes and charges on air passengers’ tickets can account for a substantial share of the final ticket price, reducing demand. African carriers often operate in smaller markets with limited traffic volumes and lower frequencies. Adding to the financial strain is Africa’s high corporate income tax rate, which averages nearly 28%—the highest among all regions.
