𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒔𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓. In Rwanda, coffee farmers supported by the Selecta Coffee Fund are proving just that. Through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), farmers pool their resources, build financial resilience, and secure the future of their livelihoods. 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒐 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕? Our livestock program provides farmers with crossbred dairy cows that supply organic fertilizer for coffee trees and extra income through milk and calves. But these cows are vulnerable to disease, and veterinary costs can be hard to cover when coffee income is seasonal. Without a safety net, losing cattle would mean: ❌ Less fertilizer → lower coffee yields ❌ More reliance on costly chemical fertilizers → environmental harm ❌ Loss of milk income → reduced family resilience The VSLAs are that safety net.
