Today’s challenges demand unprecedented collaboration. The soil crisis is urgent: climate change is rapidly degrading our fertile ground, leaving us with only 60% of the Earth's soils for agriculture, as the rest is classified as degraded. We lose 24 billion tons of fertile soil annually. The World Food Prize Foundation reminds us that food security and global stability are inseparable. This week, we were honored to be part of the Borlaug Dialogue and the cohort advancing solutions that not only feed humanity but nurture the very foundation of agriculture itself. As our Global Head of R&D for Syngenta Seeds, Trevor Hohls, said, “The science exists. The solutions exist. Farmers are ready. What we need now is greater speed and deeper commitment. A small change in the field, a big step for the future of cantaloupe harvests. 🍈 For Brady Mouzin, whose family has grown cantaloupes for nearly 90 years, the global market’s shift to long shelf-life varieties represented a challenge. These new varieties offer significant operational benefits, but no visual nor olfactory clues to determine ripeness, which confused growers and consumers alike. Many like Brady were caught between the shipping demands of an expanding market and the declining appeal of their product. We wanted to address this challenge. Thanks to Rakesh Kumar and a decade of research, our Syngenta Vegetable Seeds team designed an innovation that combines the best of both worlds: IDEAL Melons, equipped with traits that allow for longer shelf-life and visible color change as they ripen.
