The Sporting Goods Industry gathered this week at adidas, Amsterdam for a successful round of WFSGI Board and ESG Committee Meetings. Hosted by adidas’ Manuel Pauser and Sigrid Buehrle the 3-day event saw Board Members from around the world and ESG and Sustainability company experts discuss the current challenges and opportunities across our industry. Removing barriers to movement and what motivates Gen Z in the gym were key agenda items at the Health & Fitness Association's European Congress in Amsterdam last week. Thank you to Liz Clark and HFA for inviting World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) Head of Physical Activity Caroline Brooks to join the discussion and highlight the physical activity crisis among 11–17-year-olds which globally stands at a massive 81%...that’s four out of five young people not reaching the recommended daily movement levels to stay healthy. The event also provided an opportunity for WFSGI and HFA to reaffirm their commitments to supporting the world to move more made under the Joint Industries Statement on Physical Activity released last year. A win for Sporting Goods access, affordability, and economic growth in Indonesia! World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) welcomes the decision of the Indonesia Safeguards Committee (KPPI) to terminate the investigation into the extension of safeguard measures for imports of apparel and clothing accessories. We commend KPPI for its thorough and fact-based approach in evaluating this matter. Its decision reflects a balanced consideration of both domestic interests and the broader economic and public health benefits that open markets can bring. The sporting goods industry is not only a key enabler of physical activity - especially among Indonesia’s 64 million youth - but also a driver of job creation and exports in the country. With only 1 in 3 adults meeting recommended activity levels, and 81% of youth inactive, urgent action is needed. Together, our members are aligning around policy advocacy, community programs, and innovation to ensure movement is accessible to all. We need speed and scale. We need action now! The message from governments at the High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health at #UNGA80 today was clear. The Sporting Goods Industry echoes the urgency in the words from Minsters of Health and is ready to support through a whole of society approach and private/public collaborations. What’s next? 👇 The adoption of this landmark political declaration recognising Physical Activity as cost effective and health enhancing, and most importantly the resulting government actions including: 🏃♀️ Promotion of Physical Activity to combat the growing obesity epidemic 🚲 Creation of spaces for play and movement and more sustainable transport options 📱Making physical activity an accessible alternative for children to reduce excessive screen time As International Olympic Committee – IOC President Kirsty Coventry told the floor, “We must invest in what works, and sport works!
