🔬 Rock Tech Lithium receives funding for innovative lithium recovery   We are pleased to announce that Rock Tech Lithium has been awarded funding from the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt (Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space) for the project “ELiSePro – Efficient Lithium Recovery Using Selective Processes”. The aim of this initiative is to further increase lithium yield in our converter process at the Guben site, making a significant contribution to Germany’s raw material independence. The project will be implemented in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University, highlighting the strong partnership between industry and leading academic research in Germany. As part of the project, various state-of-the-art ion separation methods (including nanofiltration, capacitive deionization, and lithium-ion sieves) will be systematically compared to minimize lithium losses in the process. The results will be evaluated based on economic and technological criteria and are intended for direct industrial application. Innovative findings will also be published in scientific journals and patented. We’re excited to see that the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany’s new Hightech Agenda recognizes fusion energy as a national priority, setting a course that puts Germany back where it belongs: at the forefront of building transformative technologies. Here are some of the key highlights: 🇩🇪 A Fusion Action Plan will be presented to the federal government by the end of this year, setting the course for the first commercial fusion power plant in Germany. 🇩🇪 A Fusion Energy Research and Innovation Roadmap (FIRE) will follow by the end of next year, mapping the core technologies needed. 🇩🇪 New networking hubs for magnetic and laser fusion will enter the concept phase this year, aiming to build or expand research infrastructures and demonstrators. 🇩🇪 New funding initiatives will launch in 2025, from exploratory research to enabling technologies. 🇩🇪 The federal government is positioning itself as a potential first anchor client for fusion. Thanks to leaders like Dorothee Bär, fusion has now moved from research to industrial strategy. Germany is stepping up by investing in energy sovereignty, industrial competitiveness and deep-tech leadership, and fusion as a scalable energy solution is gaining momentum. 🌱 From Plant Sugars to Sustainable Plastics ⚡ The push to replace fossil-based plastics with bio-based alternatives requires new #reactor concepts. Tobias Harhues and his team at RWTH Aachen University have developed a Swiss-roll tubular electrochemical reactor (SRR) and a Mixer Electrode Reactor (MER) and compare their conversion performance of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from #biomass into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) – a key building block for the #sustainable #plastic PEF, a greener alternative to PET. 🔍 What’s new? Two novel tubular reactor designs were tested: Mixer Electrode Reactor (MER) – boosted mixing but suffered from uneven electric fields. Swiss-roll Reactor (SRR) – rolled-up electrodes ensure uniform electric fields, higher yields, and over 10× higher space–time yields than traditional planar designs. 💡 Why it matters: SRR achieved up to 73% FDCA yield at low current density. Space–time yield reached 437 mol FDCA/m³·h, far exceeding conventional setups. Uses cost-effective, scalable materials like nickel foam. 🌞📚 Summer School on "Nonlinear Optimisation and Combinatorics" at #TUBraunschweig 43 students and doctoral candidates from across the globe gathered at TU Braunschweig to dive into key challenges of optimisation. Organised by Prof. Christian Kirches, Prof. Timo de Wolff, Prof. Thorsten Theobald, Birte Ostermann, Nikolas Rieke and Jonas Ellwanger, the Summer School covered a set of independent, but thematically connected lecture series covering general nonlinear optimisation, polynomial optimisation and the intersection of optimisation and combinatorics. 💬 In addition to the lectures from Michael Joswig, Pietro Belotti, Sven Leyffer, and Didier Henrion, the summer school included exercises in groups. In a poster session the participants presented their own research. An inspiring event that not only advanced mathematical research but also fostered international exchange! 🌍✨ 📸 TU Braunschweig
