For anyone following global climate action - the COP30 Presidency letters are essential reading.   If you are new to the process, these letters are the Presidency’s way of setting out priorities, sharing progress updates - and guiding negotiators, policymakers, and observers on the road to the summit.   They’re like a "state of play” for the UN climate talks.   So far the Brazil Presidency have shared 6 of these. With each a helpful, plain-language snapshot of where we are, what’s at stake, and where we’re headed.   The 6th letter was released just this week. Financing nature conservation is underserved, even within overall global philanthropy. Overall private financing for nature might haveh grown over 10x in four years to $102 billion, but #philanthropy has fallen both as a share of total and in absolute numbers to <2% of annual financing flows for #nature. According to the instructive new report by CREO, there is a need to consider how to gain greater impact leverage per dollar of philanthropic giving. The good news is that #nature and #biodiversity are growing themes of interest to the private sector. This creates a unique opportunity for philanthropists and market-rate investors to achieve greater scale and impact than they could achieve on their own. In this context, catalytic capital functions as both a bridge and a blueprint: absorbing early-stage risks, underwriting foundational costs of landscape projects, and enabling the design of financial structures that can crowd in follow-on funding when scale is required. As argued in the report below, catalytic capital is most effective as an unlock in this context when it is deployed strategically, designed with intended landscape outcomes up front and sequenced with the full investment lifecycle in mind. In sum, the paper seeks to demystify existing and emerging catalytic capital structures and present a framework for how such approaches could nest up to landscape-scale: top-down, bottom-up, or via horizontal integration. The paper also discusses how family-office investors seeking to play such a role can begin by clarifying their identity as catalytic funders— mapping their values, capital pools, and risk-return preferences against the strategic role they wish to play in the ecosystem. The paper also provides several compelling case studies, including blended structures in which Good Energies Foundation is involved. I wrote up for Climate Home News why #COP30 needs a cover decision. In Short: COP30’s credibility rests on how it confronts this ambition gap. Attempts to spin COP30 as a success without such a response seem hollow. If COP30 must respond to this ambition gap, a cover decision emerges as the most credible path forward. The COP30 Brazil presidency would be well advised to pursue one. A report from the Climate Crisis Advisory Group tackles this head-on. It makes the case that voluntary carbon markets must be treated as a public good with market features, not the other way around. That shift in mindset could be transformative, especially if it helps clarify roles, responsibilities and routes to accountability. We’ve got strong technical frameworks. What’s needed now is governance by design: joined-up stewardship from governments, buyers, verifiers and intermediaries alike. New! Investment Fund for Climate Adaptation & Resilience ClimateWorks is thrilled to partner with Howden Foundation Laudes Foundation, Quadrature Climate Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation to establish a new Adaptation and Resilience Fund (A&R Fund). The A&R Fund will deliver over $50 million around the world to address climate risks through catalytic locally led adaptation solutions, such as early warning systems and innovative financial tools. With more than 2.4 billion people at risk of severe heat exposure each year, philanthropy has a critical role to play in supporting communities facing serious health and economic risks. Recent research from World Resources Institute found that, for every $1 invested in adaptation, more than $10.50 in benefits can be generated over 10 years. That means investments in resilient infrastructure and tools not only reduce risks—they also promote better exonomic outcomes, better health, and even increased wages. The A&R Fund also fulfills a $50 million commitment made by philanthropies last year in response to the UN Secretary-General’s Call to Action on Extreme Heat.
