SAP Logo Evolution over 42 Years by Tom Pfister This blog post is dedicated to Peter Leyh who designed the first SAP logo. Peter passed away last Silvester in Germany. Logos or Emblems are of great importance for any enterprise or organization. They are crucial for communicating with their customers and potential clients. In other words, they are part of a company’s branding strategy. A good logo, if designed effectively, can bring to people’s mind the unique selling proposition of an organization which inevitably promotes the company on a sub-conscious level. Most companies and organizations change their logos with time to keep pace with their changing business as well as to stay modern and meet the current ‘Zeitgeist’. Evolution is a process of change or development and here is an example of how SAP’s logo changed over more than 4 decades.

SAP has evolved its extensibility guidelines beyond the traditional 3-Tier model by introducing the Clean Core Level Concept, offering a “more pragmatic approach to managing custom code.” 🔎 What’s New Extensions are now classified into four levels (A–D) based on upgrade safety and Clean Core compliance. Provides a granular view of custom code quality beyond “clean vs. unclean.” 📊 Level Breakdown Level A – Clean: Uses released APIs & ABAP Cloud; fully upgrade-stable Level B – Tolerable: Classic APIs, broader scope but still reasonable stability Level C – Risky: Internal SAP objects without guarantees; upgrade risks Level D – Not Clean: Core modifications, implicit enhancements, direct table access → highest technical debt 💡 Why It Matters Clean Core is fundamentally about managing technical debt. Even though some users and customers resist it, SAP ECC is undeniably approaching its sunset. The classic SAP ERP—basically a modernized SAP R/3, whose foundational concept dates back to the fall of the Berlin Wall (yes, it’s that old)—has had a successor, SAP S/4HANA, for over 10 years now. Originally, the end-of-maintenance for ECC was set for 2015. It was then pushed to 2027, extended again to 2030, and most recently (with a RISE contract) to 2032. Has all this postponing changed the feedback? Hardly. Some users and interest groups still cling to the idea that the 35-year-old SAP ECC architecture is sufficient for the challenges of the 21st century—a dangerously outdated assumption if you ask me. Many ECC systems are running at their absolute limits; MRP runs often only happen on weekends. ECC implementations are so old that they no longer reflect current, let alone future, business strategies. On top of that, many ECC users are trapped in sunk cost bias, hiding behind past investments as an excuse not to embrace modern technology for future challenges. It’s time to stop making excuses. After 40 years, SAP ECC deserves a well-earned retirement. Another maintenance extension only creates the wrong incentives. Vendors promising support beyond 2040? Those are false friends.
