✅🥛 WITH FDA APPROVAL, VERLEY PLANS 2026 LAUNCH FOR FUNCTIONAL COW-FREE WHEY PROTEINS The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted a ‘no questions’ letter for two precision-fermented ingredients produced by Lyon-based firm Verley, confirming their Generally Recognized as Safe designation. The startup makes a line of recombinant functional whey proteins called FermWhey, using a process similar to beer brewing to eschew cows for microbes. Its ingredients include Native (for dairy alternatives, clear drinks, and sports nutrition), MicroStab (for ready-to-drink and UHT drinks), as well as Gel (for spoonable dairy, desserts, and meal replacements). “The FDA process was thorough and collaborative. Receiving the ‘no questions’ letter in October 2025, within nine months after notification, is a strong validation of the quality of our scientific dossier, the safety of our ingredients, and the robustness of our regulatory strategy,” co-founder and CEO Stéphane Mac Millan tells Green Queen. Formerly known as Bon Vivant, the startup is targeting the alternative dairy and functional nutrition sectors with its proteins. FermWhey Native offers 95% purity and high leucine content (an amino acid key for muscle synthesis), promoting muscle maintenance, fast recovery, and satiety. FermWhey MicroStab is a microparticulated whey protein with “unprecedented heat and acid stability”, and is meant for use in high-protein, low-fat formulations. It provides high protein density (over 20%), maintains creaminess in fat-reduced recipes, and can support innovation in advanced nutrition, weight management, and sports supplement applications. The startup is in talks with several global food and nutrition leaders, including both established CPG players and emerging startups. “We anticipate first product launches as early as 2026 with fast-moving, innovation-driven brands. For larger FMCG groups, timelines are typically longer, with commercial introductions expected by 2028,” says Mac Millan. 🚨 The European Medicines Agency’s Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) has released a draft public statement—open for consultation from August 1 to October 31, 2025—concluding that an EU herbal monograph for Cannabis sativa L., flos (cannabis flowering tops) cannot currently be established. 🔍 Following a data call in early 2023 and a comprehensive review, HMPC outlined the main reasons: • No authorized single-ingredient products: There are no approved medicinal products in the EU made solely from cannabis flowering tops. Magistral formulas exist in some Member States, but none have been evaluated or approved for specific indications, strengths, or dosages by national authorities. • Insufficient data for monograph criteria: Submissions failed to meet requirements under the “well-established use” and “traditional use” frameworks. Specifically, the evidence lacked consistency, quality specifications, and the necessary documentation of safety, efficacy, and sustained medicinal use. • Mandate and scope limitations: HMPC’s remit is restricted to herbal medicinal products. It excludes stand-alone or mixed applications (e.g. under Article 8(3) of Directive 2001/83/EC) and products based on isolated cannabinoids. The only authorized cannabis-derived medicine in the EU is a combination extract product approved since 2011. 📌 Bottom line: HMPC is discontinuing its assessment.

FDA and USDA are requesting data and information to help develop a uniform definition of ultra-processed foods (UPF) for human food products in the U.S. food supply. A uniform UPF definition, developed as part of a joint effort by federal agencies, would allow for consistency in research and policy to pave the way for addressing health concerns associated with the consumption of UPFs. Comments may be submitted until September 23, 2025. According to them “there is a clear need for a uniform definition of UPFs to allow for consistency in research and policy. With this Request for Information, we seek data and information that would enable us, as part of a joint federal agency effort, to define UPFs.” This is not the first attempt to create an objective UPF definition. Do you recall the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s initiative to improve the NOVA classification? In February of this year, Prof Monteiro and other proponents of NOVA issued an open letter, stating that the term “ultra-processed food” was defined by and is an integral part of the NOVA food classification system. They requested that the project refrain from using either the terms NOVA or UPF and called on all independent scientists to boycott the initiative as a whole. Welcome to Switzerland, Aleph Farms!👋 Israeli food tech pioneer Aleph Farms has signed a deal to produce its cultivated meat in Europe, setting up at The Cultured Hub facility in Kemptthal, near Zurich. As it awaits regulatory approval in Switzerland, Aleph Farms has chosen the canton of Zurich as the European production hub for its cultivated beef.   The Israeli startup has teamed up with The Cultured Hub, a biotech facility situated in The Valley in Kemptthal, opened last year by retail giant Migros-Gruppe / Groupe Migros / Migros, flavor specialist Givaudan, and equipment manufacturer Bühler Group.   The move is part of Aleph Farms’ localised production strategy, and marks a key milestone for its international expansion.
