In the past three decades, Southeast and East Asia has experienced rising levels of plastics use and waste and pollution. The Global Plastic Treaty Explained: Key Elements and What's at Stake An interactive 90-minute primer jointly hosted by CSE, NIVA, and GRID-Arendal, designed to unpack key issues ahead of the resumed plastics treaty negotiations (INC-5.2). The session will offer critical insights into the evolution of the text, key issues on the table – from polymers, finance, just transition and decision making – and bring together diverse stakeholder voices including civil society, industry, waste pickers, and scientists. It aims to inform and prepare participants for effective engagement in the next phase of negotiations. Experts and stakeholders will break down the evolving text, highlight critical themes and share reflections on what’s at stake for governments, communities, and industry.

Hong Kong generates more waste per person than Tokyo and Seoul, and the waste sector makes up almost 8% of the city’s total emissions. Recent research from Dane Ancheta shows how the long-delayed MSW Charging Scheme, combined with proven strategies from across Asia, could cut those emissions by nearly 50% by 2050 and support Hong Kong’s shift toward zero landfill. 𝗧𝗡𝗙𝗗 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 - 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮 The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) 2025 Status Report, launched at #ClimateWeekNYC, confirms that nature-related risks and opportunities are now recognised as financially material and urgent. ▪️ 620 organisations from over 50 countries or areas and USD 20 trillion in AUM have publicly committed to getting started with nature-related reporting aligned to the TNFD recommendations. ▪️ 63% of companies and financial institutions surveyed for the report believe their nature-related issues are as significant, or more significant, than climate-related issues to the future prospects of their business. ▪️ 77% of investors indicated in June in a Responsible Investor survey that they would like to see specific nature-related standards building on the TNFD. The report reveals a shift in mindset among companies and capital providers, who increasingly acknowledge that the resilience of the planet’s ecosystems and biodiversity underpins the resilience of their businesses. While recognising that the assessment of nature-related issues remains new and is perceived to be complicated, this report also highlights what’s possible, using existing metrics and building on existing internal capabilities. Public reporting, encompassing company engagement, impact assessment, and target setting, represents the fifth commitment of the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge. At Finance for Biodiversity, we support financial institutions in advancing their disclosure practices by leveraging leading frameworks such as #TNFD and #CSRD. Together with our members, we are not only working to meet compliance requirements but also to foster true accountability and deliver meaningful impact. At IETA’s North America Climate Summit, WWF-Singapore and Hatch Blue jointly announced the launch of Blue Catalyst, the first open #innovation challenge dedicated to advancing technology solutions for high-quality blue carbon projects across Asia and beyond. Blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves and seagrasses are nature's climate powerhouses, storing carbon up to 4x more efficiently than terrestrial forests, while protecting coastal communities and supporting biodiversity. Despite their potential, scaling projects aimed at restoring these ecosystems remain difficult, with persistent barriers in project implementation and measurement, reporting, and verification. Hosted in #Singapore, Blue Catalyst aims to strengthen the quality of blue carbon projects through scalable technologies like smart nurseries and accurate geospatial mapping to monitor ecosystem changes. It will also connect project developers, researchers, and innovators to co-develop and pilot global solutions. Ultimately, these blue carbon projects will unlock high-quality carbon credits that deliver impact for #climate action and coastal communities across Asia. The initiative will debut in January 2026. With over 150 carbon services and trading firms based here, Singapore is uniquely positioned as a hub in Southeast Asia to connect science, innovation, and markets – and drive nature-tech innovation for climate action.
