I am excited to submit my entry for this week's competition, themed around Nature and Climate. My dashboard, “Weathering the Storm: America’s Storm Events Unveiled,” provides a comprehensive exploration of storm events across the U.S., analyzing their frequency, fatalities, and economic impact from both a national and state-level perspective.
Dashboard Highlights & Features

✅ Interactive Storytelling – A structured, step-by-step experience that guides users from a macro to micro-level exploration of storm data.
✅ Storm Event Deep Dive – Users can select a specific storm type to analyze its historical trends, financial impact, and human toll.
✅ Accessibility First Approach – Implemented alt text to ensure a smooth screen reader experience and inclusive access to insights.
Alt Text Implementation & Learnings
One of the most valuable takeaways from this competition has been the deep understanding of how alt text enhances dashboard accessibility. I started using this feature late in the competition but I ensured:
- Descriptive & Dynamic Alt Text: Alt text is dynamically generated using measures in Power BI, ensuring that screen reader users receive real-time insights as data changes.
- Immersive Storytelling in Alt Text: Instead of just describing visuals, alt text narrates key insights, making the experience more engaging.
- Logical Tab Order & Navigation: Properly structured navigation so that screen reader users can explore the dashboard logically and intuitively.
This competition has truly reinforced how accessibility and data storytelling go hand in hand, and I look forward to applying these best practices in future dashboards. But since this is my first time, I really appreciate any inputs for further enhancing my usage of alt text.
