Charging an electric vehicle is a little similar to charging your smartphone: you plug the charging cable into a socket and off you go. What your smartphone can’t do, however, is feed unused power back into the grid. But why would anyone want to do that? 🤷♂️ Because more and more of our electricity now comes from renewable sources. Here's why: Without storage technologies, it’s impossible to consistently align our energy needs with the renewable energy that’s available at a given point in time. Which is why, going forward, there will sometimes be too little or too much energy in the grid. What’s called for is a system able to compensate for these fluctuations. Smartphones may not be the solution for this (as our 24/7 companions, aren’t their batteries constantly running low? 😉), but the situation is different with electric vehicles. The keyword here is bidirectional charging. This trick lets us turn e-vehicles into mobile storage units that can feed unused power back into the power grid when it’s needed elsewhere. At Fraport we’ve been working since 2023 as part of the ReSkaLa project with Hamburger Energienetze GmbH and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences to introduce this technology at Frankfurt Airport as we expect to have around 1,200 electric vehicles in use by 2026. Together, they can store a large amount of energy. Bidirectional charging can be taken advantage of to stabilize this power reservoir and make it readily usable. As an airport operator, with this project we’re taking an important step in protecting the environment and climate. Our #NetZero climate protection goal – namely, to offset all of the Fraport Group’s greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2045 at the latest – is helping us make major progress toward it. This approach also reveals new paths for policymakers and society, since additional applications outside FRA are conceivable. It paves the way for efficiently using energy and making sure that it’s always available when and where it’s actually needed, whether it’s for operating infrastructure, machines and vehicles, or for charging your smartphone … 😉 #GettingGreener #DestinationNetZero #fraport #frankfurtairport #ConnectingTheWorldWithTomorrow #electromobility #ChargingInfrastructure #BidirectionalCharging

😉 #condor #eintrachtfrankfurt #eintracht #frankfurtairport #ConnectingTheWorldWithTomorrow

The 2025 Frankfurt AI Week is currently underway at THE SQUAIRE at Frankfurt Airport. Over five days, from October 27–31, executives, innovators, and AI experts are gathering to explore the opportunities that artificial intelligence brings to a wide range of industries. Fraport AG is proud to be part of this important event. 😀 As the operator of Frankfurt Airport, we leverage AI technologies to make our apron and terminal operations faster and more efficient – for the benefit of both our employees and passengers. During their keynotes at AI Week, Fraport AG's Alexander Laukenmann, Senior Executive Vice President Aviation, and Rolf Felkel, Senior Vice President Applications and Partner Management, shared insights into the latest AI applications at #frankfurtairport. Felkel emphasized the cultural and mindset shift required for increased AI adoption in airport operations: "The biggest challenge isn’t just technology – it’s culture. We need to be open to change, work together, and support each other. Success comes from combining data and technology with the right attitude," he noted. "At Fraport, we celebrate curiosity, teamwork, and new ideas." One of the most innovative AI-based solutions implemented at Frankfurt Airport is Seer, a camera-based application for ground operations. As Alexander Laukenmann explained: "By introducing our computer vision approach, 'Seer', we achieve maximum transparency in aircraft handling, improve punctuality, and ensure efficient resource use. By sharing real-time data with our airline partners, we achieve higher performance and enhance the travel experience for our passengers." Apron operations are among the most complex processes in aviation. ✈️ "They require seamless collaboration between numerous stakeholders to ensure aircraft are handled efficiently," added Laukenmann. "Many thanks to all colleagues at Lufthansa, ZeroG, and everyone else involved for their collaborative approach to data sharing and process optimization." We’d also like to extend our thanks to AI Hub Frankfurt for hosting AI Week! We’re excited to connect and explore the future-shaping ideas and opportunities emerging from AI. 🤝 #ConnectingTheWorldWithTomorrow #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #Innovation #AIWeek #Fraport

What a wonderful story. 😍 Kirstin Lehmann and Bianca Eckert are the perfect example of how #mentoring is not just about knowledge transfer but also about personal relationships and a shared history. Kirstin is a Project Manager at Fraport and has served as a mentor in the company for many years. She took Bianca under her wing while she was studying as part of the Hesse Mentoring program, marking the beginning of a fruitful collaboration and friendship, which has remained strong even after the mentorship ended. Just like Kirstin, over 30 Fraport employees actively participate in the Hesse Mentoring program, supporting up-and-coming female leaders in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) occupations. Here at Fraport, we also participate in other mentoring programs to support women in their career development. We are truly delighted to see that our partnerships in these programs has real value and builds long-term relationships. 🤝 #Fraport #ConnectingTheWorldWithTomorrow

An increasing need for energy at Frankfurt Airport and the #NetZero climate protection target – how can they be reconciled?🤨 With more than 500 companies and the new Terminal 3, which will be inaugurated on April 22, 2026, FRA is like a small city – also in terms of its energy requirements. It consumes large amounts of electric power for lighting, climate control and a wide range of systems and equipment. Many people may be asking themselves whether environment and climate protection are being neglected. The answer is an emphatic NO! At Fraport we’re continuing to pursue the goal of operating Frankfurt Airport with net zero status – in other words, greenhouse gas-neutral and CO2-free – by 2045 at the latest. A key component is migrating to a power mix that mainly comprises renewable energy sources – and we’re advancing with giant steps! See for yourself in this video. 👇 #GettingGreener #fraport #frankfurtairport #ConnectingTheWorldWithTomorrow

#ConnectingTheWorldWithTomorrow #frankfurtairport #fraport #travel

A groundbreaking energy management project for Frankfurt Airport is entering its next phase: our new photovoltaic system is now operating at Runway 18 West! Our CEO Stefan Schulte and Kaweh Mansoori, Minister for Economics and Transport of the state of Hesse, together pulled the lever to switch on a transformer station. “The significant attention that this novel system has received from around the world is encouraging us to continue with our bold approach, as we break new ground,” stated Schulte. “The opening today is not just a defining moment on the airport’s path towards a climate-friendly energy supply, it also reflects a commitment to innovation and progress in Hesse,” emphasized Mansoori. The new photovoltaic system’s special feature is its vertical structure, which makes it particularly ecofriendly and efficient. In contrast to conventional horizontal systems, it lets sunlight and precipitation pass right through to the ground below to help vegetation thrive. The new system’s small footprint also saves space and ideally supplements the rooftop photovoltaic systems that have already been installed on various buildings at Frankfurt Airport. Their conventional angled design lets them achieve their peak output in the middle of the day, while the new vertical modules are ideal for harvesting solar energy in the morning and afternoon. The system consists of a total of 37,000 solar modules with a total length of 2,800 meters. Going forward they will generate up to 17.4 million kilowatt-hours of electric power a year for the Fraport Group companies operating at the airport. The captured solar energy will mainly be used for climatizing the terminals and powering our steadily growing fleet of electric vehicles. At Fraport we’ve committed ourselves to achieving #NetZero status within Scopes 1 and 2, in other words to greenhouse gas neutrality and complete elimination of CO2 emissions at all of our fully-consolidated airports by the year 2045 at the latest. And now another important step has been taken. “The energy mix at our home base will come largely from renewable energy sources,” said Schulte. “Today, we’ve taken a major step towards meeting this ambitious target” #fraport #frankfurtairport #GettingGreener
