Thrilled to share new work with Jigsaw (Google), just published in the Journal of Online Trust & Safety. Through ethnography, we developed a typology of “information modes” — a framework that helps product teams, educators, and innovators design with the grain of how people actually navigate and interpret information online. This is what our social tech teams do best: combining deep ethnography with strategic foresight to help build next-gen products that meet users where they are and empower them.

What a week at EPIC 2025 in Helsinki! Gemic was once again proud to sponsor the EPIC Conference 2025, the global gathering for researchers, designers, strategists, and leaders who use deep understanding of people and socio-technical systems to shape innovation, strategy, and meaningful impact. A huge thank-you to the organizers and speakers for their energy, thought-provoking talks, and inspiration. EPIC continues to be the place where our practice grows stronger through shared methods, diverse perspectives, and human connection. To mark a kind of homecoming — Gemic was born in Helsinki and has since grown into a global force with offices in New York, London, Berlin, Toronto, and Abu Dhabi — we hosted a small off-conference event, Gemic After Dark: Un-Intelligences, which turned into a full house of curiosity and conversation. Again, thank you to everyone who attended EPIC 2025, to those who joined our gathering, and to all who keep this community alive, pushing forward the practice of research, strategy, and human-centered growth 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

We’re proud to have partnered with Google's Jigsaw to explore what it really means to strengthen human agency in the age of AI. Through fieldwork across three countries, we developed a holistic framework of five dimensions of agency that go beyond common themes of control and productivity. This work helped bring into focus Jigsaw’s new priority as an organization: structural agency, or the ability to navigate and shape the systems and decisions that govern our lives. Further, it helped crystallize a vision to rally and plan around—one that is equal parts rigor and hope. As Jigsaw puts it:   “Through our research, we know that AI, like any new technology, has the potential to widen the gap between people’s desire to change the world and their ability to do so.
