Tiny – yet mighty in its environmental impact: Let’s change the SIM card game!💡 In 2024, nearly 4 billion physical SIM cards were shipped worldwide – that’s a stack of cards nearly 3,000 kilometers tall! And don’t forget the plastic cardholders that come with them. There's no doubt that the SIM card industry has a large environmental footprint. 🌍 So how can we switch to more sustainable SIM cards? 1️⃣ Smaller card bodies made from recycled materials 2️⃣ Renewable energy powering the manufacturing process 3️⃣ Localized production to reduce transportation impact What are we at G+D doing to lead the change? By 2026, we’ve targeted to use 100% recycled plastic in SIM cards for the European market – and by 2030, globally. 🌱 Our Eco SIM card is made from recycled ABS material and produced using 100% renewable energy. Africa embraces blending cash and digital payment solutions. Let’s take a closer look! 🔎 1.5 billion people. 54 countries. And a rapidly evolving payment ecosystem. With it's unique landscape for both cash and payments innovation, governments and financial institutions across Africa have a common goal: they are actively seeking ways to bring more people into the formal financial system and foster financial inclusion. Additionally, a number of interrelated factors is driving a rapidly changing payment landscape: Africa has the youngest population of any continent – and high mobile phone penetration. People are open to new technologies and the appetite for innovative payment solutions is growing. Still, cash remains king. Trust in cash is growing, and so is the need for a more efficient cash cycle. Topics like automation in cash management, analytics, storage, and logistics are increasingly in focus. With 90% of transactions still done in cash, it will continue to co-exist alongside digital and hybrid solutions - many of which are unique to Africa. Mobile money, agent banking networks and biometric authentication are just some of the latest innovations in the region's payment landscape. And when it comes to Central Bank Digital Currencies, African central banks are among the global frontrunners. From a crystal ball to a custom banknote – G+D made its mark at the ESTA Business Conference with bold ideas and forward-looking innovation. 💶✨ Celebrating 50 years of the European Cash Management Companies Association, G+D proudly played a key role, honoring the legacy of cash while sharing our vision for its digital, sustainable future. 🏛️ As part of the official gala dinner, we presented a specially designed commemorative banknote to ESTA board members – our tribute to a future-oriented industry with strong roots. 🔮 On Day 1, Renato Diato, our Global Vice President and Head of Commercial Solutions, took the stage to explore what cash processing might look like in 2045 during the panel “Looking into the crystal ball.” His take: smart automation, predictive analytics for cash logistics and more sustainable operations will define the next era of an efficient cash management. 👥 Throughout the event, our team welcomed guests at the G+D booth – offering a space to connect over coffee, explore innovations like the BPS C5 evo and Notatray, and exchange ideas about the future of cash.
