Brazil has advanced key national strategies that embed ocean conservation and sustainable use into climate policy — with support from Germany´s International Climate Initiative (IKI). ‼️ Key achievements: ✅ Marine Spatial Planning (MSP): IKI supported national training, assessments, and stakeholder workshops that laid the foundation for MSP in Brazil — now institutionalised by federal decree. ✅ Mangrove protection: Home to the world’s second-largest mangrove area, Brazil is strengthening mangrove conservation through a new national programme shaped with input from government, academia, civil society, and traditional communities. ✅ Coral reef conservation: Following the most severe coral bleaching event on record, the IKI contributed to the development of Brazil’s national coral reef strategy and action plan — formally adopted in 2025 and presented at the UN Ocean Conference. ✅ Climate Adaptation Plan for the Ocean and Coastal Zone: The IKI is supporting Brazil in developing its first national plan to address the impacts of climate change on marine and coastal ecosystems — expected to be approved at COP30. With over 8,500 km of coastline and rich marine biodiversity, Brazil plays a central role in global ocean conservation. These initiatives mark major progress in aligning ocean conservation with climate action and resilience. 🔎 Learn more about how our IKI project TerraMar II is driving concrete action for healthy oceans and a sustainable future: https://lnkd.in/dJsqxvDX #IKIinBrazil #IKItopics #biodiversity #ClimateAction Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH GIZ Brasil Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Klimaschutz, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit (BMUKN) 📷 Studio Lumix/GIZ

Info
🌳 South Africa and Germany join forces to restore landscapes Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider and his South African counterpart Dion George have launched the Restoring Landscapes in South Africa (ReLISA) project, funded by Germany’s International Climate Initiative (IKI). The project supports South Africa in scaling up the restoration of degraded landscapes, focusing on grassland, savanna, and thicket ecosystems. Globally, over 2 billion hectares of land are degraded, affecting 3.2 billion people. ReLISA provides a model for how countries can work together to scale up restoration and unlock economic, social, and environmental benefits. 🔎 Here is the full article: https://lnkd.in/d8BFnEhh #GenerationRestoration #IKIinSouthAfrica Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Klimaschutz, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit (BMUKN) UN Environment Programme Carsten Schneider 📷 launch: DFFe 📷 nature: A rhino in the thicket at sunset: UNEP / Todd Brown Drakensberg Mountains grassland landscape: Pexels / Alexander F Ungerer Fence-line contrasts healthy and degraded thicket: Africarbon PTY (Ltd)

How Is Brazil Turning Climate Challenges into Opportunities for Resilience? Brazil is among the countries most affected by climate-related disasters — from devastating floods in the South to record-breaking droughts in the Amazon. Strengthening resilience is therefore not just an environmental priority, but a cornerstone for sustainable development. Since 2017, the ProAdapta project, supported by Germany´s International Climate Initiative (IKI), has played a strategic role in helping Brazil implement its National Climate Change Adaptation Agenda. ✅ Over 4,000 contributions gathered for Brazil’s renewed National Adaptation Plan (Plano Clima Adaptação) ✅Engagement with 260 municipalities and 700+ institutions nationwide ✅Support for the design of local adaptation plans in cooperation with the Green Climate Fund ✅Integration of principles such as climate justice, nature-based solutions, and multilevel governance By linking national strategies with local action, this IKI project demonstrates how inclusive planning and strong partnerships can drive long-term climate resilience — in Brazil and beyond. 🔎 In this third episode of our #IKIinBrazil series you will learn more about how the IKI supports climate adaptation & resilience: https://lnkd.in/dMuhXShb #IKItopics #ResilientFuture #adaptation Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Klimaschutz, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit (BMUKN) GIZ Brasil 📷 by ProAdapta View of the Brazilian city of Santos: The IKI project relies on close cooperation with federal states and municipalities. IKI site visit in India! The Ramsar site and national park Bhitarkanika revealed the incredible beauty of its unique and diverse mangrove wetland – as well as some of its challenges – to the IKI delegation during their visit. The 'Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection' project has partnered with local communities to mitigate pressures on natural resources. Wetlands play a crucial role in climate and biodiversity protection: they are important allies in the fight against climate change, as they store vast amounts of greenhouse gases. Healthy mangrove ecosystems reduce the severity of floods and protect communities from their impacts. Wetlands provide livelihoods and help to filter and purify water – and they are astonishing hotspots of biodiversity. The cooperation under this IKI project contributes to improving the integrated management of wetlands. Since the beginning of our cooperation, the number of designated Ramsar sites in India has significantly increased – from around 26 in 2018 to more than 90 in 2025.
