  • 🎓 Designing with Purpose: How FH JOANNEUM Students Shape Visual Culture From self-acceptance campaigns to reversible books on gender and poetic studies of urban life—students at FH JOANNEUM (Graz, Austria) are redefining what communication design can do. Their work stands out in the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design for its consistent blend of formal precision and social relevance. Each project reflects a personal perspective that resonates beyond the classroom. 🔹 Think Responsibly by Mila Weger A celebration of analogue design methods, particularly letterpress printing, the bachelor’s thesis highlights the importance of materiality and haptics in an increasingly digital design education. The minimalist book project underscores the value of hands-on practice for deeper creative understanding. 🔹 Lieblingsmakel (Favourite Blemish) by Katharina Diem A social media–based installation exploring beauty in imperfection that invites a shift from self-criticism to self-acceptance. Collected answers about people’s favourite “flaws” were displayed on the BIX façade of the Kunsthaus Graz—combining body imagery with public reflection. 🔹 Designing Women by Nina Botthof A reversible book with black-and-white contrasts that examines the intersection of design and the female experience. It explores how design can contribute to the emancipation and visibility of women, combining critical societal analysis with a thoughtful design concept. 🔹 Views of China by Christian Leban A master’s project consisting of eleven hand-drawn animation loops, capturing the complexity and beauty of life in a Chinese city. The immersive and emotionally resonant work offers artistic insights into Chinese culture. These projects show how design education can foster critical thinking, empathy and a strong personal voice. 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eWG-6pnf #RedDot #CommunicationDesign

  • What if you had to flee? To raise awareness for the work of Sea-Watch e.V. and the ongoing refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, the project team created a simulation designed to confront participants with the emotional reality of forced migration. 🚨 In a swimming pool, 40 volunteers – representing a cross-section of German society – sat in a narrow inflatable boat. Over several hours, they experienced stress, discomfort and disorientation, replicating aspects of the conditions many refugees face at sea. Their responses were documented in the short film “Lifeboat – The Experiment”. By putting participants — and later, viewers — in the shoes of refugees, the campaign delivered something no headline could: the feeling of what it’s like. 🏆 The project was awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best for its emotional impact and innovative format. Shout out to the project team members: Lifeboat – The Experiment (2019): Serviceplan Group, Alex Schill, Maximilian Florian Schöngen, Markus Maczey, Michael Wilk, Dennis Fritz, Anton Reim, Philipp von Mauch, Skye Fitzgerald, Felix Tonnat, Daniel Farkas, Mirko Kaminski, Katharina Bittner, Katharina Schölzel, Jochen Lenhardt, Michael Seidler #RedDotAward #CommunicationDesign

  • How design can rebuild lives: The story of VinziRast 🏠 What does it take to give someone a second chance? A roof? A warm meal? Or perhaps, a place that offers dignity, purpose, and belonging? In Vienna, the social initiative VinziRast chose design as its medium and empathy as its message. 📦 During the height of the pandemic, when public attention was elsewhere, a striking campaign appeared in the city’s most visited squares: life-size cardboard figures, each assembled from discarded boxes. Each one represented a real person affected by homelessness. QR codes printed on the bodies led to stories of resilience, shared by people who had found shelter and a future through VinziRast. The material was no coincidence. Cardboard, often used for makeshift beds, became a symbol of vulnerability and visibility. What’s normally thrown away became a medium of remembrance and recognition. 💡 To mark VinziRast’s 20th anniversary, a second campaign took a quieter path — but was no less moving. In collaboration with artist Fanny Allié, a light installation emerged in public space, inviting passers-by to pause. Digital elements extended the message, offering background on the organisation’s work and a direct way to donate. Both projects were honoured with the Red Dot: Best of the Best. They show what happens when design is used not to brand, but to bear witness. 📢 Shout out to the project team members: VinziRast Gets You Back on Your Feet (2021): Heimat Wien/freude.agency, Simon Pointner (Art Direction/Creative Direction/Concept), Fabian Kohlert (Art Direction), Philip Krautsack (Creative Direction), Paulina Sadlo (Graphic Design), Leopold Kreczy (Text), Barbara Binge-Furtner (Project Management), Renate Hornstein (Concept/Text/PR), Robert Korbei (Managing Director), Blautöne - Tonstudio, Ines Schiemann (Music/Sound Design), Blaupapier GmbH, Alfred Lechner, Nina Herzog, Yannik Steer, Claus Bukowski, Havas Media Network VinziRast gets you back on your feet. • How do you make people see what they often choose to overlook? More than 200 million women and girls around the world are affected by Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Every 11 seconds, another becomes a victim. Contrary to widespread assumptions, this practice takes place not only in distant regions, but also in countries like Germany. To draw public attention to this ongoing human rights violation, the organisation TERRE DES FEMMES e. V. launched the campaign Open Your Eyes on the international Day of Genital Self-Determination. The concept is based on a striking visual: what initially appears to be a depiction of female genital mutilation turns out to be a pair of closed eyes, symbolically sealed shut. This simple yet powerful image is supported by the campaign's core message: “Open Your Eyes”. It encourages viewers to reconsider what they see—and what they ignore. The visual serves as both metaphor and call to action, aiming to provoke awareness without relying on explicit imagery. The campaign was further amplified through an online platform sharing personal accounts of affected women, as well as strategic support from influencers and public figures. As a result, it generated a noticeable increase in public engagement, supporters, and donations. Awarded a Red Dot: Best of the Best in 2018, Open Your Eyes exemplifies the power of visual communication to address complex social issues. Through clarity, conceptual strength, and a carefully crafted metaphor, the campaign translates a sensitive topic into a format that resonates across audiences and platforms. ➡️ View the full project here: https://lnkd.in/erCs9gVd 📢 Shout out to the project team members: GREY Germany / KW43 BRANDDESIGN, Fabian Kirner, Alexandros Antoniadis, Markus Werner, Thomas Kuhn, Martin Venn, Mueller, Hajo, Sandra Herich, Alper Yazar 📥 Do you have a project that demonstrates the impact of design?
