UNCCD is the global voice for land. We champion healthy, productive and accessible land for all #UNited4Land

Info

Our lives depend on land. Healthy land feeds, shelters and clothes us. It sustains our planet’s vital ecosystems, preserves biodiversity and plays a fundamental and increasingly urgent role in mitigating climate change. When land has been degraded by human intervention or plagued by drought, it loses its capacity to sustain life with dire consequences. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the global vision and voice for land. We unite governments, scientists, policymakers, private sector and communities around a shared vision and global action to restore and manage the world’s land for the sustainability of humanity and the planet. Much more than an international treaty signed by 197 parties, UNCCD is a multilateral commitment to mitigating today’s impacts of land degradation and advancing tomorrow’s land stewardship in order to provide food, water, shelter and economic opportunity to all people in an equitable and inclusive manner. Abundant healthy land fosters our collective wellbeing and resilience, and can enable all people to live on a safe, just and prosperous planet. #UNited4Land

  • 🌱 Restoring land restores lives — and Kyrgyzstan is showing how Steep mountains. Deep valleys. And a rising challenge: land degradation that already touches 1.9 million people — 35.5% of the country. In 2019 alone 1.83 million hectares were classified as degraded. With the support from the Changwon Initiative by the Korea Forest Service, we have been helping communities turn vision into action: 🌱 4 rural and forestry nurseries across Chui and Talas on 8 hectares 🌱 24 school nurseries growing the next generation of stewards 🌱 Training on nursery management, pest control and pruning 🌱 Risk maps and policies aligned with Land Degradation Neutrality This is more than trees. It’s skills, income and resilience for pastoralists and farmers whose livelihoods depend on healthy land. The foundation is set. Now comes the scale up — invest in people, strengthen institutions, share lessons, take pilots national. Because when the land heals, communities do too: https://lnkd.in/e-StdWVk #UNited4Land 🌱

  • From the World Food Forum and the Rome Water Dialogue, Rome delivered clear directions for food, climate and peace — and a pathway to scale what works. Outcomes at a glance: — Rangelands & Indigenous Peoples: stronger calls for land rights, recognition of customary governance and full participation in policy and practice, building on UNCCD COP16 momentum — Water security: evidence from partners shows that investing in healthy land and water returns multiple benefits for livelihoods, climate and biodiversity — Action track: practical next steps on policy support, capacity building and data-driven targeting to combat land degradation and build drought resilience ahead of UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia — Inclusion: women, Indigenous Peoples and youth centered as solution leaders shaping design and delivery What enables this: FAO and UNCCD renewed cooperation on 15 October through a Memorandum of Understanding backed by a Joint Action Plan to align expertise and accelerate implementation. • Reporting from the FAO World Food Forum, where our Executive Secretary Dr. Yasmine Fouad joined a high-level panel on Indigenous Peoples as key partners in combating land degradation and desertification alongside representatives of Guatemala, South Sudan and Mongolia — host of the next UNCCD Conference of the Parties. Around the fire with Indigenous leaders — sharing insights, committing to action — Dr. Fouad reflected: “Protecting Indigenous Peoples' lands is not optional – it is survival, dignity and justice.” Rangelands cover half the planet and directly support 500 million people yet many are degrading fast. Building on UNCCD COP16’s first global decision on rangelands and pastoralists and the establishment of the Indigenous Peoples Caucus, UNCCD and FAO are joining efforts to advance secure tenure, inclusive governance and sustainable rangeland management. Next stop: COP17 in Mongolia and the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 — elevating pastoralists’ voices, linking land, water and food systems and turning knowledge into impact. Restoring lands means restoring food systems — and restoring food systems means reviving hope. As Dr. Fouad summed up: “Sustainable management of water and rangelands to ensure food security: one action with double result. The global community will deliver together at UNCCD COP17.” #UNited4Land #IYRP2026 #WFF #UNCCDCOP17 #WeAreIndigenous

🌍 Welcome to Day 5 of the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi! After four vibrant days of public engagement, the Forum officially closed last night, and the Exhibition wraps up this afternoon. As the doors close to the general public, we move deeper into the Members’ Assembly, the focus shifts to governance, strategy, and collective decision-making. 🗳️ Today’s focus is on the adoption of IUCN’s draft 20-year Strategic Vision and the vote on motions that will shape the future of global conservation. These decisions reflect the collective will of IUCN’s diverse membership and set the course for the decades ahead. 📖 We also spotlight a powerful story on opening access to conservation knowledge, reinforcing IUCN’s commitment to transparency, equity, and shared learning. We reaffirm our commitment to the conservation of nature — not just through action, but through strategy, vision, and collaboration. The decisions made here will shape how we protect biodiversity, support communities, and build a nature-positive future for generations to come. #IUCNcongress #MembersAssembly #VoteOnMotions

  • The theme of this year's International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is 'Fund Resilience, Not Disasters'. ¿ DYK that drought costs the world USD 307 billion per year, whereas every USD invested in drought resilience has an up to 10X return on investment ? We are proud to team up with partners like United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) to make sure the world manages drought is risk, instead of enduring a silent a disaster. #UNited4Land #IDRA

  • 🌍 New Global Report Warns: Broken Connections in Nature Threaten Life on Earth. From rivers cut by dams to farmland expansion and urban growth, the natural ties that sustain life are breaking down — putting food, water, biodiversity and livelihoods at risk. Launched today at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, the Global Land Outlook Thematic Report on Ecological Connectivity and Land Restoration reveals that nearly one-third of Earth’s land is already degraded and fragmented. Produced by the UNCCD and Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the report shows how healthy land and water systems depend on ecological connectivity — the natural flow of species, water and energy that keeps ecosystems alive. When these links are lost, the consequences ripple across communities and continents. 🦩🐘🐋🐟 From Europe’s Green Belt to Costa Rica’s wildlife corridors and Indigenous-led restoration in Bolivia, real-world examples show that reconnecting nature also restores hope, resilience and opportunity. 📘 Now available for download: https://lnkd.in/eqUapfGH Andrea Meza Amy Fraenkel #UNited4Land #EcologicalConnectivity #IUCNCongress
