The European construction industry faces a critical knowledge gap 82% of German construction companies lack the necessary knowledge to unlock digitalisation's potential. Yet digitalisation serves as a crucial lever for sustainability, and it's urgently needed, as the numbers reveal: buildings account for 40% of energy use in the EU. Building Information Modelling (BIM) can play a decisive role here. BIM doesn't just make planning, construction, and building maintenance more efficient, it also makes them more resource-efficient. Nevertheless, nearly half of European public organisations have still not implemented their BIM strategy. In Germany, only one in every ten surveyed construction companies actually uses BIM, despite two-thirds recognising its potential as very high or quite high. 🌎 News from the USA: Viega LLC has received LEED® Gold certification for its new facility in Mantua, Ohio. 🏭 Just a few weeks after the official opening, the site has been recognised by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for meeting high standards in energy efficiency, resource conservation, and the use of environmentally friendly materials. Cities must prepare for the climate crisis 🌡️ But how? Researchers at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) are tackling this exact question. The team has developed an AI model that has been trained with geodata such as building heights, vegetation structures, and climate projection data. This enables it to simulate current heat stress and the effects of various climate scenarios. Urban planners will be able to calculate with a single click how much an additional tree will contribute and where it would be best placed. Instead of time-consuming expert reports, AI enables precise, efficient planning. Once again, we see how data-driven technologies can make important predictions for construction projects. The digital and collaborative working method Building Information Modelling (BIM) also pursues this data-driven approach. BIM is considered as a holistic approach to building design and enables the creation of optimised and sustainable buildings. While AI models help cities to develop in a climate-resilient way, BIM helps to ensure that buildings meet future requirements. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎗 A month that reminds us of the importance of prevention and support in the fight against cancer. The figures are alarming: every year, millions of people around the world are diagnosed with cancer. Approximately 2.3 million of these cases are breast cancer, which predominantly affects women. Early detection can significantly influence the course of the disease and improve chances of recovery. At Viega, people are at the heart of what we do. That’s why the health of our employees is a particular concern for us. Since June 2024, we have been proud partners of the Working with Cancer Initiative, making a strong statement for greater openness and comprehensive support for employees affected by cancer in the workplace. Our support programme is built on three pillars: 🏛 financial security through increased sick pay, 🏛 coverage of medication and travel costs for treatment, 🏛 and a comprehensive prevention package with additional cancer screenings and accompanying informational resources. We are grateful that we have already been able to support many employees on their journey since the initiative was launched. Planetary boundaries are at their limit 🌊 With that, so is our potable water. The new 'Planetary Health Check' from the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research warns: seven out of nine critical planetary boundaries have been exceeded. That's one more than last year, with ocean acidification being the new addition. Freshwater systems, which have been in a critical state for years, are under even more pressure now. This is because ocean acidification increases the strain on the global water cycle. These global developments reinforce what we are already observing in buildings: outdated building services, construction defects and climate change increase the risk of microbiological contamination in water. To ensure health and safety, improvements must be made from the building entrance to the final point of use. As planetary systems come under pressure, the responsible use of every drop of potable water in our buildings becomes increasingly important. Three years, three times “best in chamber” (Kammerbeste): Marie Dünnebacke continues winning streak in Elspe 🏆 Following in the footsteps of Lilija Gerber (2023) and Dajana Schneider (2024), Marie has now received this special recognition for 2025 as a process mechanic for plastics and rubber technology. This is the third consecutive year, where a Viega Elspe trainee is amongst the top performers by Germany’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Siegen (IHK Siegen). Marie was able to impress the examination board with 82 points, making her part of the best graduates in her region. This speaks to the quality of our training programmes and the dedication of our trainees in Elspe 😊 “We are very proud of the achievements of Marie, Dajana, and Lilija which highlight their diverse talent,” explains Robin Blöink, Training Manager in Elspe. Their mission: mobilising companies for sustainable construction. Under the slogan #BeBoldOnBuildings, the international construction industry delivered a clear message: "Business goes better when you're bold on buildings.” In other words: Those who fail to act courageously regarding buildings are complicit in the climate crisis. The construction sector is responsible for nearly 40% of global emissions. Digital planning methods like Building Information Modelling (BIM) could make a decisive contribution here but are not yet being used comprehensively.
