Europe’s #mobile #payment landscape is fragmented between domestic local players solutions (e.g., Swish, Bizum, TWINT), global OEM Pays (Apple Pay, Google Pay), and emerging pan-European initiatives (e.g., #EPI’s #Wero, EuroPA). Domestic systems grew @ 46% CAGR (2017–2023), OEM Pays @ 70% CAGR. OEM Pays dominate in major markets: In markets without strong local players, Germany, France, Italy, Apple Pay and Google Pay have gained ground rapidly, benefitting from native smartphone integration and international card scheme rails. Local players outperform in home markets: In countries like Sweden, Poland, Portugal, and Switzerland, domestic mobile A2A systems process 7–25% of card-equivalent volumes and are ahead of OEM Pays in penetration. Their success hinges on strong bank collaboration, P2P functionality, and local relevance. Interoperability is advancing but complex: Initiatives like EPI, EMPSA European Mobile Payment Systems Association, and #EuroPA aim to bridge domestic systems across borders. However, full technical and commercial harmonization remains a long-term challenge and likely a 10+ year journey. While there is a strategic shift toward regional clusters, consolidation around multi-national collaborations (e.g., EPI–EuroPA partnership) is emerging as a more realistic scenario than a single unified EU solution. Kertos secures €14M Series A to build Europe’s compliance desk Munich-based #Kertos has raised €14 million in a Series A round to accelerate its mission of building Europe’s first fully automated compliance desk for SMEs and scaleups. Founded by lawyer-turned-entrepreneur Dr. Kilian Schmidt alongside Johannes Hussak and Alexander Prams, the company was born from the founders’ frustration with manual GDPR processes and has since evolved into a comprehensive compliance suite. Kertos began by automating GDPR data subject requests but now covers a broad spectrum of regulatory requirements, including ISO 27001, ISO 42001, NIS2, DORA, and TISAX. Its platform leverages AI agents to manage evidence collection, vendor checks, policy drafting, and audit workflows, while introducing a “Peer-to-Peer Trust Graph” that enables companies to reuse verified controls across their networks. The fresh funding will be used to enhance automation, expand the Trust Graph, and scale the platform’s reach across Europe’s fast-growing regulatory landscape. With compliance demands from GDPR to the upcoming EU AI Act intensifying, Kertos positions itself as an EU-native, automation-first alternative to fragmented solutions, ensuring that compliance runs seamlessly in the background while businesses focus on growth. Latvian Fintech Delegation Visits Sparkassen Innovation Hub The next item on the program for the fintech group was a visit to the Sparkassen Innovation Hub (S-Hub). 🏦 The German banking group Sparkasse is a unique network of more than 350 independent savings banks across Germany, coordinating their activities through five Landesbanken, all under the umbrella of the national association DSGV - Deutscher Sparkassen- und Giroverband . Sparkasse is an exclusively regional structure, serving the interests of local customers in each federal state and city. Despite its complex governance system, it enjoys exceptional trust and loyalty among its clients. 💡 S-Hub, founded in 2017, is the innovation laboratory of the Sparkassen Group. To date, the team has launched over 300 projects, developing new digital services, testing ideas, and creating forward-looking financial products. The team applies agile methodologies, design thinking, and involves end users throughout the development process.
