In March-April of 2022, about 10,000 refugees from Ukraine were arriving *daily* at the central train station of Berlin. In May-July 2022 this number is about 1500/day.
I led the efforts to help refugees with transportation who were heading further beyond Germany:
- Keeping track of transportation policies for refugees across all European countries
- Communicating the rules and policy updates to refugees at scale
- Training volunteers on the ground

As a recognition of my efforts, I was given a "FreiwilligenPass", a recognition certificate from the city of Berlin.

I’ve read a lot of design books. But these 7 changed the way I work. 1. Sprint — Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky, Braden Kowitz The fastest way to test big ideas in just 5 days. I still use it with clients. 2. Designing for the Digital Age — Kim Goodwin The most complete manual on human-centered design. Covers research, interaction, and product strategy. 3. Thinking, Fast and Slow — Daniel Kahneman Cognitive biases 101. If you design flows or write copy, this is your secret weapon. 4. Good Services — Lou Downe Clear rules for designing services that actually work in the messy real world. 5. Universal Principles of Design — William Lidwell et al. 125 design laws in one book. I open it whenever I’m stuck. 6. Creativity, Inc. — Ed Catmull Pixar’s playbook on building creative teams and protecting originality. 7. The Mom Test — Rob Fitzpatrick How to talk to customers without them lying to you. Essential for research and validation. Each of these is worth its weight in gold if you’re in design, product, or tech. I’m thinking of posting my full 30+ book list with notes on when to use each. Would you want that?

🐎 Fixing AI Horseless Carriages (https://lnkd.in/dFqugVyx), a helpful reminder that many modern AI interfaces mimic old ways of building software that unnecessary constrain the AI models they’re built with. In many way, they resemble first cars that imitate horse carriages. Wonderfully written by Pete Koomen. AI systems rely on a system prompt to “ground” the model by defining how it should interact and respond to user requests. Users can typically define their own custom instructions for AI, too — e.g. in “Customization“ or “Personalization settings”. Both system prompts and custom instructions are applied for every user’s prompt, and are re-used over and over again. The problem is that custom instructions don’t distinguish between different contexts that people shift throughout a day. In the morning they might ask a question as a father, during the day as a financial analyst, and in the evening as a semi-professional cyclist. People are complex, and AI doesn’t account for it. Instead, every single time we need to ask a very specific question, explain the context, remind of the key details, and iterate on prompts to get a very specific answer to a very specific questions. It would be much more efficient to derive the context based on the query. And sometimes it happens via “memory”, but memory is often polluted with random queries that don’t really fit any context. I think that one of the most impactful changes we can do in AI interfaces is to allow users to set up multiple “personas” in the AI UI, along with filters or rules or guidelines for each. Each would include enough context learned from queries over time, and hence it would automatically to match a tone when drafting family-related emails, or show videos for cycling-related prompts — with an option to override if needed. Most AI interfaces expect user’s input to “generate anything”. Most AI products expect users to carefully orchestrate and prompt engineer their prompts. But why can’t AI speak user’s language instead? And as designers, shouldn’t we provide UI controls to help people quickly articulate what they need with the minimal keystrokes, and let AI generate the most accurate prompt it needs? We are just figuring it out. But I sincerely hope that in the near future, we’ll do less prompting and fewer prompt iterations — and perhaps more filters, buttons, dropdowns, sliders to articulate just what exactly we need, and in what way. A wonderful reminder by Pete Koomen, with an example of what a slightly better Gmail’s AI assistant could look like. #ux #design
