Very pleased to show off "Capacity charts", the latest feature of OpenElectricity (formerly OpenNEM). https://lnkd.in/gPZd36dj With this new feature you can see the changing mix of Australia's generation fleet — by capacity (rather than output). I've wanted this feature for years, but first we had to collect data on all 478 significant generators connected to the two grids we monitor. It's been a great pleasure to be the product manager of OE since 2017. OE is built on the great foundations and expertise of Dylan McConnell. Front-end by Steven Tan, Back-end by Nik Cubrilovic and facility data lovingly curated by Lynton Hoey and help from many others at its "new" home The Superpower Institute. Pumped hydro & batteries are gas-killers. Batteries are eating the high-value revenue streams for ancillary services and morning & evening peaks. Snowy 2.0 can capture much of the high-price market for overnight storage and a wet windless week. Gas generates 11 TWh per year in Australia’s National Electricity Market (only 5% of total gen). Capacity factor is low, but prices are high when operating. Snowy 2.0 has storage volume of 350 GWh (= 7,000,000 EV batteries) which is 85% of all Australian storage. Its capital cost ($34/kWh, 100-year lifetime) is 10X below batteries. On most days it could play with 5-10% of its water to displace overnight gas. Occasionally it can fully discharge over a wet & windless week when prices go high, and capture this lucrative gas market also. Theoretically, if operated 24/7 (pumping & generating), Snowy 2.0 could displace about two thirds of current gas generation. It will usually recharge when prices are low or negative. Building several more Class AA pumped hydro systems allows pumped hydro & batteries to eliminate gas from the NEM. There are 300 Class AA sites (size 50-500 GWh each) in southeast Australia. News from AEMO: The reliability of NSW energy system over the next 10 years has improved thanks to the rollout of renewables. Even with Eraring’s closure, NSW is not expected to face reliability gaps if planned renewable projects go ahead. Already 1/3 of NSW’s energy is from solar and wind. We are on track to secure a future of affordable and reliable energy.

Innovators in regional NSW are playing a critical role in driving the state’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Through the Clean Technology Innovation program, $26.2 million is being invested in 13 groundbreaking low-emissions projects, helping to turn promising research into real-world solutions. This funding is part of the broader $275 million Net Zero Manufacturing Initiative, which is designed to accelerate innovation and decarbonisation across the state. Regional companies are leading the way, including PlasmaLeap Technologies, Sicona Battery Technologies, FPR Energy, Lab 360 Solar, H Nu Energy, Renewable Metals and Kardinia Energy. These businesses are demonstrating that regional NSW is helping to turbocharge the clean economy. Projects supported by these grants include: ✔️Underwater robotic hull cleaners that reduce ship emissions and prevent the spread of invasive species (Hullbot) ✔️Shark-skin inspired adhesive films that reduce aircraft drag and emissions A cleaner, more efficient method for lithium extraction (MicroTau) ✔️On-farm technology that turns agricultural waste into green hydrogen and ammonia (HydGene Renewables) The world’s first commercial facility for Printed Solar, recently showcased during Coldplay’s world tour. Engineers Australia recently co-hosted a roundtable with Consult Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors, focused on a key issue: #Engineers having a seat at the table — in boardrooms, across industries, and at all levels of government. #Engineers are outstanding problem-solvers but despite that, they remain significantly underrepresented in board roles. Engineers Australia is working to ensure engineers understand the #skills they need to secure board positions, and that boards recognise their value. We’re expanding our board readiness programs nationally to support Engineers who bring systems thinking, integrity, and a solutions mindset, exactly what strong boards need.
